This is what constitutes "entertainment" for some. We live in a sad sad country.

The good news is: no one heard it. O & A couldn't draw flies when they were on old fashion free radio.

It is so sad to watch all these hacks try to be Howard Stern...

Since surfin radio air waves forever out of curiosity and interest and boredom, I've always found the wave crest getting higher and higher till one day it is going to be the biggest wave to ever hit Americas shores.
These guys wave is just bogus.
Careful surfing the airwaves some sharks bite your ear off, and hurt feelings. Should we get rid of tyhem all. no. Just harass the shit out of them on the phone lines and their managers. Thats the best way. Tell them it pisses you off. Or just simply ignore them. but that doesn't solve anything does it?

Something tells me that the likelihood of these losers ever fucking some bitches is rather low. The only thing they'll ever be punching in the face is their own dick. "Hey, woman! Hey woman" -- that's beyond pathetic. But hey -- gotta fill those programming hours somehow.

Free speech is a bitch, ain't it? And talk about glass houses, this damning coming from a rag that's practically calling ignorant anyone who doesn't want to understand a documentary about animal rapists.

Stay classy, Stranger!

Just out of curiosity, what does "fuck her" dead mean?

Does he want to fuck them hard? Fuck them so hard that they die? or fuck their dead bodies?

It doesn't really matter, just wondering if "fuck her dead" mean something specific.

Oh lord, are Opie & Anthony still around? They started out on regular radio in Boston when I was growing up, and all the boys in my middle school loved them to death. They are awful.

What makes that any worse than some of the crap lyrics from so many of the hip hop/rap music out there? Also, it was the "caller" who was spewing this garbage not the dj's. Any idiot could walk up in front of a taping of Evening Magazine and start saying that same crap to John "No Lips" Kerley. Exactly what is so offensive here? I'd think The Stranger would be giddy at this kind of attack being aimed at such an upstanding citizen as Condosleeza Rice.

So, I don't really have an investment in this, but I'll go ahead and pitch it just to see if anyone swings--

Rape can be funny.

I mean, obviously it depends on your sense of humor. There are some things that some people will never find funny. Race jokes, jokes about murder, whatever. But lots of people do find rape jokes funny, and most of those people are basically pretty normal. So, for example, our culture has a huge catalogue of fairly off-hand jokes about getting raped in prison. And you look at that and go, “Well, okay, America incarcerates five times more people than any other industrialized nation and our culture actually assumes that all these people we’re sending to prison are going to be violently raped. That’s totally fucking sick.” And you're not wrong. But we still make jokes about not dropping your soap in jail.

And any social scientist will tell you that part of how humor works-- physically –-is that the punch line surprises you. It creates a shock moment of cognitive dissonance and the nerves react with a little stutter-- a laugh. So “bad” jokes are generally some of the best jokes.

I’m not defending the specifics of what these guys did; I think validating the kind of humor they were using-- talking about specific sexual assault against specific people --by allowing it to be presented in a licensed public forum constitutes tangible harm to the public good. And I’ll even break my usual rule about this kind of stuff, based on the details of what he was saying, and stipulate that what Homeless Charlie actually seems to me to go beyond satire. I think the DJs could conceivably be prosecuted for soliciting sexual assault or conspiracy to commit, and I think there's a case for procecuting Homeless Charlie for harrasment.

But I still disagree with the blanket thesis that rape is not funny, to the extent that we have a lot of basically socially acceptable humor about rape.

I'll agree with Judah. Sometimes rape can be funny.

I agree with everything Judah said AND continue to stand by my original statement (see #2).

Rape can be funny until it happens to you or someone you care about then it kind of loses that wacky zing.

Yeah, rape is really funny. 'Cause you're men, and the chances that you'll get raped are minuscule compared to mine. So keep laughing, asshats.

Prison rape, however, is a pain in the ass. And that's funny.

I won't even drop the soap in my OWN shower. I don't like the looks of that nozzle hanging over there.

If this were about raping Dick Cheney, it might have been sort of funny.

See, that’s a perfect example.

“What about Dick Cheney?”

“Man, I’d fuck that bitch dead.”

“Oh my…”

"Pretty easy to do. Just jump out startle the motherfucker, wait for him to stop breathing, go to town."

"I'm imagining the horrified look on Vice President Cheney's face--"

“Yeah, see how he likes it when someone shoots on his face.”

Bada-bing. Acceptable rape humor.

Gotta agree there. Man-rape is funny, for two reasons I can see: it has that gay tinge to it. And gay things are definitely still ok to laugh at. Not as many jokes about women raping men, because men love sex however they can get it!

It also seems highly unlikely, unless you find yourself in a specific situation, like incarceration (at which point, of course, it becomes unfunny). Rape for women is more likely to happen in any place (so, raping women is not really funny in most places).

I've frequently heard guys joke to each other about raped in the ass. I gotta say I've never heard women joke to each other about being surprised in a dark alley.

I have to ignore that this turned into a discussion about how funny rape can be, and in what situations it's most funny, because I don't know how to respond to that. But I do want to say @ #8 that I'm so sick of hearing about "free speech" in this kind of situation. Free speech is a reference to the fact that our government can't legally infringe on our right to speak freely. However, in a country with free speech laws, the community has the right and the responsibility to decide for itself what is acceptable. The government isn't throwing them in jail for something they said, ECB and the rest of us are condemning them as fellow citizens. Society has a right to police itself, and if people decide that Opie & Anthony have fucked up, then society can decide on its own punishment, as can their managers and advertisers. And I plan to write to their managers and advertisers to let them know that.

Rape in prison is only funny if you don't have the slightest clue about what life in jail is actually like. It's a situation where we use humor to dehumanize, because it makes it a hell of a lot easier to justify the way people are treated -- why question what goes on in the prison system when you can make soap jokes? I've tutored and worked in prisons for years, and I'm always amazed at how little people know about that part of our society. Easier to make them all out as monsters and joke about what happens behind bars than to question the way we treat inmates. gIgnorance is bliss, I guess.

Rape in general? Never funny. Never.

Yeah, except not. My father was raped in prison and yet I still find prison rape jokes funny. Know why? Because one's a horrible thing that happened to a real person and the other one's a joke-- and I know the fucking difference.

Horrible shit is often funny. If you're a certain kind of person, part of how you deal with horrible shit is by making jokes about it. I'm not saying your personal tastes are wrong. I'm just trying to point out that that's all they are: your personal tastes. Rape jokes are never funny to you. Fine. But to me, some rape jokes are hilarious. Not because I'm ill-informed, not because I'm a guy, not because I have no connection to the reality-- just because I find different things funny. That's all.
