It's SIFF season, when Stranger staffers take a break from the difficult task of sleeping at their desks and instead repair to the city's movie theaters, where they tip back their heads and doze in cushy chairs, air conditioning blowing around their unwashed coifs and gibberish dreams (soon to be turned into SIFF "movie reviews") churning about in their few remaining brain cells.

Is it me, or does this assesment by A. Birch Steen sound like the pitch by one of the many drug dealers I encountered when living in the CD, or now ignore totally, since they regularly do business 20 yards from my door a few miles south of the CD?

In some sense, ABS's 'A Critical Overview' is the section I look at first when opening each new issue while waiting at the bus stop. The past several months (probably years) have stayed the course with the unnecessary hilarity that befits this 'column.'

"Maker's Marxist" - funny funny phoney. love it. The other bullshit is boringly humourous as well! It heartedly confirms Willie the Shakes' maxim:

Help the SIFF festival by picking up volunteer shifts using their online Shiftboard at http://www.shiftboard.com/siff .

You get ticket vouchers and can schedule yourself when and where you want after joining 1 or more department/teams. You can also find other stuff to volunteer for at other local organizations that use the same system (like kexp, bumbershoot, etc). Neat.

My daughter was probably too young to be there, but I had to get more info for when she turns 8. She had an awesome time. They had a mini camp, and everyone in there demonstrating was really cool and somehow managed to give demos that resulted in people picking up new fills etc. in a couple of minutes. The drums were a massive hit, my daughter loved her sticks and ripped them out of my hand later, and there was one girl (maybe 8) who's got a serious future.

That's all a side note, the bands were fantastic. My daughter lost it after the second act, but they were really great. The co-director who was really nice and into this movement. Ev1 @ CS and ev1 volunteering were fantastic. It was great. I'm just hoping to find out where all the pics and video will be posted. Thx all.

Last night at the party for A Battle of Wits, Girls Rock was the subject of more than one conversation.

Sounds like everyone who saw it loved it.

Saw it, loved it, and heard a wee bit of Palace's SF Sucks song in the movie. Now I'm totally miffed no one told me the girls were gonna play Chop Suey. Where the heck was that event advertised?

GR was a pleasant surprise. I was signed up to volunteer during the screening which was easy enough with the shiftboard. I got to see the film and I also received ticket vouchers for my time. Yes, I feel guilty. I hope I get to see Anthony Hopkins but I can't afford (justify) the tickets and I haven't found any volunteer shifts for the event online yet.

Hey, co-director of Girls Rock! here, and just wanted to thank y'all for being such supportive audiences! We had a great time at the screenings and the concert. Thanks Arne. Again, great event, and I've been telling everyone who'll listen about how much fun my daughter had. We're dying to see the movie. Brilliant idea to make it, and I expect it to be a phenomenal success. I can't wait until my daughter if old enough to go to Portland. If you're ever looking for a place to put up promotional stuff for the movie (or the camp is) in Seattle, my daughter's mom owns a kids clothing store in Ravenna and would be happy to help out.
