Gay Pride in Moscow

posted by on May 29 at 10:10 AM

This is what it looked like this year as gay rights advocates from Russia and the European Union tried to get permission to march in Moscow. A European Parliament deputy was kicked. A British pop singer was punched in the face. And the parade organizers were arrested.

More here.

DAMN!! That is called standing up for your rights!! I just have a whole new respect for the gays in Russia for standing up to oppression. That is what Gay Pride is about, Pride! and Political Action!

This is fucked, and so is Russia. I went to Soviet Georgia in 1990 (to perform in a production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; why else?) and it was the most terrifyingly homophobic place I've ever been, mostly because the hatred of gays was so widespread, and so casual. Russian students talked nonchalantly about banishing those found to be gay—"blue boys," they called them—from family and society. "It's better to be dead," one 20-something drama student told me, like she was relating a fact about the weather.

Clearly, nothing's changed, and here's hoping more international figureheads follow London Mayor Ken Livingstone's lead in condemning this barbaric bullshit.

(Insert "I'm too sexy for my hairline fracture" joke here.)

You think Americans in the South are violently bigoted and hateful? We have no idea, for the most part.

Micah Painter was just the tip of the iceberg of the level of hate the Slavs have for gays.

David - what had changed in Russia is more alcoholism, more inequality and shorter life expectancies, unfortunately, so its not much of a surprise that the country has not progressed socially since communism ended.
