She can sing, but looks too much like Shrek to actually win.

Also, rumor has it that the fix has been in for some time. Jordin will beat (box) Blake next week.

The only reason they didn't kick Blake off was because they had to at least have one white person and one male in the top 2. The only reason they were going to kick Blake off was because they needed to keep that girl called Jordin because she's in High School. She will win based on her age.

They do not want to be racists, sexists, or ageists [sic]. Look at all of the other seasons of American Idol. Look at the order of who goes/stays. America's vote my ass.

Remember kids, diversity only comes in colors.

The truly talented who only make it to third or fourth position are the lucky ones. They've already established their talent and can go on with their carreers without living under the horrible AI contract.

*would have

Which is why M lost. And I think she looks more like that hairy thing in PRIMAL RAGE than Shrek.

Freakishly talented, in what way? I'm sorry, I've heard her, and she CANNOT SING AT ALL. None of them can. She can warble, and hit some notes here and there (nothing to brag about, though) but she can't actually SING her way out of a paper bag. She hasn't the first idea about how to express an emotion; she's probably never experienced one.

The worst thing about American Idol is how it has destroyed people's ability to understand what music IS. She's not singing; she's doing a striptease for a battering boyfriend with her vocal cords. I've got shoes with more soul than that.

And the other ones are worse.

To Melinda Doolittle, who did not shed a tear last night..WHY? In her mind she was thinking of former American Idol loser now Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson.

Cheers to Melinda!

Blake is never going to be a pop star. First, he's not cute enough and second he's not talented enough. His little beat boxx stuff is kind neat and different but I give him little hope of commericial success. Jordin Sparks, in my opinion, may not be the most talented singer, but she is damn good and has more of that 'pop star quality' that is American idol.

I am sorry Melinda did not go to the finals. I am also sorry LaKisha was out last week.

I disagree that she wasn't a great vocalist, it's just that she wasn't interesting. There are a lot of great vocalists out there but not nearly as many people with charisma. I thought she was the strongest vocalist but that didn't make me want to watch/listen to her so I'm not surprised she's axed.

If she looked like Janet Jackson instead of Freddy Jackson, she would have won.

I just don't see Melinda as being as marketable as Blake and Jordin, to be quite honest.

I always felt like Melinda was too old and she'd do better in the Christian R&B genre than pop music.

Blake and Jordin fit perfectly into the pop music that American Idol is designed to generate.

I'd like Blake to win because I believe he's much more of a musician than Jordin. He seems to have a vision for what music should be. His take on Bon Jovi made me actually like a Bon Jovi song.

Fnarf, you always save your true ire for stuff where the stakes are extremely low. (I seem to remember a similar tear about Anna Nicole Smith and I'm sure Paris has gotten the treatment, too.)

I want to hear the same rage applied to homelessness or human trafficking or pollution or actual injustice!

I look at those hysterical girls who cry and scream when Blake slides on up in their vicinity and I am reminded of my powerful love for a certain member of Duran Duran back in the days…never ever underestimate the power of young teenage girls in love. It can move the world off its axis, I am telling you.

Stephanie @ 20's right: People like us can philosophize all day on blogs, but it's the horny little girls who actually dial those voting numbers, repeatedly, who call the shots.

All the barbs at Melinda could have been each said, once upon a time, for an upstart named Missy Misdemeanor Elliott. It's an understatement to say Missy's done just fine. Just sayin'.

Jordin Sparks, based off her pre-fox censored myface or whatever, spends her 17 year old weekends with abortion is murder signs outside of arizona clinics.

Whoa: I work in social justice for a living. And if you think I only hate on pop fluff, you're not reading all the comments. I also question your suggestion that pop music is low stakes. Pop music is the most important thing in the world.

Will Friedwald said once about Sarah Vaughn and Barbra Streisand: "singers like Vaughn use technique to reveal emotion; singers like Streisand use technique to CONCEAL it". As artists, these people are severely lacking, I'm sorry.

Part of the problem is that their "skills" are so unsuited for the job. Being able to sing well hasn't been a valuable talent in pop music for fifty years. Being able to generate excitement is. I'm not feeling it.

Even the cool kids over at Slog are addicted to the vacuous, advertising-driven claptrap of Idol. So the worst has happened. They've gotten to everybody.

Fnarf, I hear you. But remember that last year, America voted most for a gray-haired Muppet who vocally best-resembled Michael McDonald or John Fogerty with throat cancer. And not long before that, America voted for an illiterate Macy Gracy imitation.

All I know is that I miss LaKisha's rack.

Jackie: If it's any consolation, the whole of my interest in American Idol comes from having an interesting local in the finals. Total fairweather-fandom, much like the week of pro-Seagull feelings i had when they made it to the world series or whatever. I'm a strictly provisional AI addict, and I imagine I'm not the only one.

It doesn't surprise me that Mindy-Doo didn't. Her voice is powerful but sterile. She reminds me of Diana Krall, who brings technical proficiency without emotion. Melinda is perfect for what she is - a backup singer who provides the lead with a platform to stage a show full of energy and excitement.

Did anybody notice that Blake looked stunned when Melinda got voted off? I don't think he was actually expecting to make the Top Two. He and everybody else thought Melinda would be there. I also wonder if he is thinking: "What have I gotten myself into?"

Go Blake!!

MFW@22
Because they're both "unconventional" looking black women?

Missy Elliott was always musically innovative, interesting, eccentric, and funny. And was an established songwriter/producer before her first album. Her success has been one of the most unlikely in pop music and its inexplicable she doesn't get more recognition. Bjork is really her only peer, artistically, in current music.

Melinda appears to have the backup singer passivity that's kept almost every other extremely talented backup from becoming a star. Really good at taking directions, but not trusting or having their own vision.

I agree with you on Missy, but you lost me with the whole Melinda's-type-keeping-the-truly-creative-down thing. How does this work? Aren't these two paths to stardom just two different sets of cogs in the music industry that never see each other?

Still though, I want to see a successful Melinda. She may not be Hollywood famous, but perhaps famous to the people that matter to her (I know, such an "awwww" defense.)

And to clarify, I was just focusing on the barbs here on Melinda's physical appearance. (I wasn't terribly offended by the barbs or anything... i try not to be offended by anything Idol related.)
