Celeb Context Is Everything; or, Why Blake Lewis Rules

Here’s the thing about American Idol: It’s designed to suck. A weekly televised karaoke contest, where the competitors are forced into themes (country week! “inspirational” week!) and crappy tie-in car commercials, is designed by God to make me wince.
However, I am an American, and so I watch, sometimes, and once or twice I’ve been struck by how Idol’s vacuum of creativity creates a most interesting platform for those rare competitors-with-ideas to shine.
Case in point #1: Fantasia, who blew minds and secured her triumph on whatever season of Idol she was on by plopping her barefoot ass down on the stage to belt out a Gershwin tune.
Case in point #2: Last night’s performance by the crown prince of Bothell Blake Lewis, who performed a percussion-infused rendition of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” that, amazingly, did not make me want to die. Props to the Idol contestant confident enough to sacrifice singing time to make weird noises with his mouth. Go Blake!

He did look kinda good here. I thought he was ehh before. Plus, I love Bon Jovi (don't tease me - I don't care) and still like this.
Damn the slog for making me watch American Idol. I was a virgin before Sanjaya.
That almost makes me want to figure out where Bothell is.
I thought the dark dye job made his face look really fat. Kind of like Simon LeBonBon. I don't get why people dig him so much. He's just another gay Mormon boy with an oddly shaped mouth.
I think what David said about context is exactly right, that's why people dig him. Compared to the other performances his drips coolness. I think he killed it last night...
For the record, he's no holy underwearing Mormon and if he's gay then his girlfriends have been the hottest transvestites I've had the pleasure of resting my eyes on.
I’m having a real problem with last night’s episode of Veronica Mars, which covered some heavy duty area.
In a nutshell: Someone sprayed racist graffiti on the local Mid East restaurant and our gal is hired to investigate, so far so good. Veronica finds the cracker who is then confronted by the owners of the restaurant. They give him a sanctimonious speech about what America® means to them then let bygones, etc.
Turns out the cracker was pissed about his brother coming home from Iraq a paraplegic and the restaurant’s illegal immigrant busboy, Nasir, handing out an “anti-American” cartoon at the mall depicting US Troops entering Iraq and coming back in coffins. Um, that’s not anti-American, that’s a fact of life backed up by daily death tolls.
Well the owners of the Mid East restaurant are all American® now and shit, so they rat out Nasir to the ICE and he’s arrested then presumably shipped off to Guantanamo Bay to be fitted with his own CIA-approved, electrified butt plug.
So what was the point of this ep? That you’re not a real American if you don’t approve of US invasions and occupations (like I said, heavy duty for a Veronica Mars ep).
Am I way off the mark, or did VM jump the jingoism shark?
anyone appearing on american idol will never be cool. thats just a fact of life. it is a heartless corporate machine that lobs "talent" to 14 yr olds. similar to justin timberlake. he was a backstreet boy. thus, he will never be accepted as good or cool. some sins can never be forgiven. just like modest mouse selling their song to american idol/ford.

That was the first time I have EVER heard "You Give Love A Bad Name" without me wanting to put a bullet through my head. Great job, Blake! Fuck You, Bon Jovi.
#7: I agree with the heartless machine thing, but it's a heartless machine that lets a few folks turn music into a lucrative career. Blake was already working on that but now he'll be able to comfortably pursue the dream of doing what he loves and without starving.
Once again, it's about context. By the by, what is "cool"?
