Wow, looks like a very scary group at the LGBT Center. They will stop at nothing to sabotage the weekend. Everyone was talking when SOaP was having its problems but now that we have a new Seattle Center Pride Fest not even a peep on here from them or on any of the other gay Seattle blogs that support a Capital Hill Pride. It is like if they don’t talk about it maybe they can squash the downtown Pride Fest.

for the record - Cindy Baccetti mentions press work as well as fund raising at her on line site.

She has never returned any phone calls from SGN, not of late or earlier.

I believe she was working to fund raise on a fee basis - 15 per cent - which is fine, but that might be a reason to not use her services in favor of existing staff/board or volunteers.

Perhaps, some of the larger orgs. like Pride, or Lifelong or the Chorus can use her services....or a favorite charity of the Stranger....

Good luck Cindy.

I had attempted to meet her in a more confidential location, and she and I completely missed one another.
Without telling her? Can't imagine why you missed one another.

It sounds like a simple misunderstanding that of course got all the egos aflame again, proving once again that being right is more important than the task at hand. Pathetic.

Clearly new leadership is needed on both sides.

I hate hate hate hate hate the infighting in the GLBT community in Seattle. It's childish and unproductive, and I'm profoundly embarrassed by both SOaP and the LGBT Center. The former is a financially and fiscally incompetent organization of amateurish hacks, whose greatest sin is not being aware of their own amateurishness and getting real financial advice at any point. The latter is a mysterious organization whose passive-aggressive and manipulative strongarm tactics are veritably Rovean, whose greatest sin is trying to enrich and promote itself at the expense of the communities it tries to serve.

I'm disgusted with both organizations and I hereby boycott both events this summer.

Don't bother returning any voicemail messages either, that always goes over well.

I agree with #4. It's time for some new leadership. Staying home is looking better and better.

Face it, the downtown pride fest is doomed to always be the most boring.

All the rest of us will be enjoying the one on the Hill, while you can be all PC and whatever with your We Be Mainstream parade.

Shouldn't every day be Pride Day?

Fine, Will, stay on the hill where it's not "boring."

We'll be downtown having as much fun as we did last year. There's enough fun to go around.

Ditto @5

I have been reading about and trying to fathom the infighting of the LGBTI community in Seattle since I came out over 10 years ago. The war of egos surrounding the parade has always been the most egregious of the 'battle grounds'. It is truly too bad the energy cannot be focused on creating a fantastic and unified Pride experience for everyone.

I hope Pride weekend is beautiful for those that go to either or both of the parades. However, I'm going to find something else to do.

For reasons of confidentiality, all meetings must be held in a secret location not disclosed to any of the participants. Uh, right. Cloak and dagger much? Where are the grownups?

#2 God forbid she should be paid for what she does for a living. Typical Seattle, give us what we ant, but don't expect us to pay for it.

They just love getting mentioned in the papers.

Perpetuation. LGBT stereotypes.

The GLBT community should heartily endorse both parades. Saturday is the day to march down Boradway and enjoy the scenery. It's the day you patronize all the GLBT business owners that have supported the community over the years. Have a great time, drink lots of liquor.

Come Sunday march downtown and have a great time with the whole city watching you. Your out, your proud, your marching through downtown (imagine trying to do that 30 years ago). GO have fun at the Seattle Center, go support the Roller Girls, and finally enjoy dancing your ass off in the fountain.

I see no reason why you have to pick one day over the other, when you can make it one big homo weekend.

OK Gonzo, but x% of those that party hard on Capitol Hill won't be feeling that chipper enough the next morning to trek downtown.
Oh, to be 20-something again!

#13 - I really agree, pay fund raisers well, most orgs. fail due to lacking a strong funding plan.

But the option to use connections, previous funders, in house lists, volunteers, and board members - that option/approach can save big buck fees and work well too.

Cindy is a one person office and - I suggest if she had had hot money ready to place anywhere, justly earning her fees - she would be aggressive in getting that done.....or no payday.

Having had all my calls to her ignored, this all seems a little contrived.

Good luck Cindy...... when this is over, will send you some business leads.....several fall events SGN is involved in.

#17 George Bakan - Wow you sure spend a lot of time reading the Stranger Slog. Of course you have NO WINDOWS at the world headquarters of the SGN - so you need some where to go and find out what's really going on. Hey you must have been calling Cindy the "one women office" to offer your huge SGN Sponsorship to SOaP. I can't imagine why she didn't call you right back - except that you're a time bandit living in your outdated world at your pathetic outdated rag of a what you call a newspaper. Just why were you calling her - to give her contacts for sales to help the Pride events - NO! You were calling her to get an interview and waste her time and then you'd just twist the words around to continue the Us vs. Them shit to sell some newspapers. You have no room to talk down to a "one women office" - maybe you should get more - you'd get a view, get a life and maybe loose some weight.

above - Personal attacks and name calling at really counter productive.

Cindy mentioned my calls to her - not I - in a public e mail, why?....they were actually more personal....and intended to be helpful. I REALLY ADMIRE gutsy small business owners, get a clue Patty.

A friend called to tell me I was mentioned again on Slog...is it bad form to reply to posts when your name comes up?

As to my weight, your are right, I need to keep trying to slim down a bit....but doubt it was an honest concern. I hope I remember the term "time bandit" after my 100th birthday, many years from now.

Get a grip PP.

OH POO POO George you love to name call when it helps get your paper off the floor (from being a door stop) and into peoples hands to read. If your calls to her were so helpfull are you saying that you helped provide the sponsors they have up on their site? How many did you bring to the table? I'll bet not one- because you're on the QUEER FEST COMMITTEE of the LGBT Center.... If you got more excercise physically it wouldn't only help your weight but also your outlook - That internal office at SGN is CLOSED IN - Like you...
Maybe I should have said TIME VAMPIRE.
Hey at 100 you'll qualify to be pickled and put on display at your buddy - Charlette LeFevre's Museum of the Mysteries.

@ Proud and Fatty Patty, I really have a lot of respect and admiration for Bakan so the personal attacks are beyond childish. It seems like so many years ago he was dealing with heart surgery and here he is still contributing to the SGN. Your personal attacks on George make me feel sick. However, I certainly agree that the parade is better suited downtown. The SGN is very dependent upon gay business dollars from the Hill because the more lucrative those businesses are the more advertising dollars they get. Sad that it has come down to that.

"Keep your friends close, but hold your enemies closer"

Of COURSE George would peruse the Stranger , just as I am sure that Dan and whoever is in charge over at the Weekly peruse the SGN - after all, they *do* all compete for elements of the same market segment. Only an idiot wouldn't.

@18, 20 Is it just me, or do other folks notice that getting all pissy and indulging in name-calling and personal attack indicates a lack of any rational contribution. "Hey, I can't really argue with George, so I'll just insult him and call his character into question...." with a side helping of "I commit the following sins, thus all others must"

@22 Loyalty to friends, business associates, and customers is not such a very bad thing in and of itself, and as a bonus, lays the groundwork for dealing with the occasional "Governor Craswell", or "President Brownback".

Both SOAP and the LGBT Ctr efforts could, in equal measure, benefit themselves and the community immensely by throwing open their books and meeting minutes for the last two or three years, announcing in advance the times and locations of their meetings, publicly admitting any and all outstanding debt or litigation, and get on with putting on their twin events sans further sniping. Get it ALL out in the open and be done with it.

Both groups need to shut up and put on their events to the best of their ability, floats and all, and ignore the existence of the other one as a pointless distraction, and Clark and Rasmussen as two more of the same.

As a previous sponsor and parade marcher I asked SOAP for their financial statements two years ago not to mention a posting of their minutes. Silence.
Any public person or organization who has donated should get a financial statement.
Until they post a statement and as a consumer alert, I don't recommend anyone or any sponsor working with SOAP.

Cindy Baccetti - feel free to send me SOAP's 2005 and 2006 financial statement if you've got the guts or better yet, please post on SOAP's website so the public and all sponsors
can review.

From Capitol Hill Times March 5, 2007:
"COMPLAINT FILED
Charlotte LeFevre, director of the Museum of Mysteries on Broadway, has not only been critical of the organizing committee, she has filed a complaint with the state Attorney General's Office in which she alleges that the Seattle Pride Committee has not forwarded a requested financial statement and appears to have misappropriated non-profit public donations for their personal businesses."

Advertisements show Seattle Pride Committee's marketing director Kershner [Dale Kershner] and board member Marcus Purnell awarded themselves advertising status of "Official 2005 Pride Guide" and essentially generated revenue from a nonprofit event and funneled to their private publication called Magazine 99.

Purnell publishes the magazine and Kershner is listed on the magazine's Web site as "advertising sales" and sales partner.

"I believe this is in violation of the RCW 24.03.030, which states "A corporation subject to this chapter: Shall not make any disbursement of income to its members, director or officers. I also believe this to be a blatent conflict of interest and feel due to statements made that other board members have awarded themselves revenue and contracts for their private businesses," LeFevre stated...
[basically, your not supposed to pocket event money!]

LeFevre, as director of a non-profit corporation (Broadway's Museum of the Mysteries) said she understands how nonprofits are supposed to work and she believes there are many irregularities surrounding SOAP.
[an understatement]

"They have not put up their financial statements, I think, in the past three years," LeFevre said. She thinks a full and public audit of the organization is called for.

Seattle Out and Proud is registered with the secretary of state as a nonprofit corporation. LeFevre said she believes it is not [and its still not] filed as a nonprofit with the federal government, so donations to the organization are not tax deductible."
