Eli, you're right - the comment thread at towelroad is a lot more interesting than the myspace freakout that happened here.

oh. my. god. I can't believe people can actually watch these full videos. Two seconds into it and I can't stand the way he talks. Not just the lisp..which I still don't get why gay guys force a lisp, maybe y'all can shed some light... it's the screechy voice he's making and the stupid Britney Spears accent. And then the faces he makes, the way he smacks his lips between words... God it's just not cute!! Highly annoying. But he does resemble Posh Spice (nostrils and chin) so I guess that's something positive....if you want to resemble Posh Spice!

whats the message he is trying to spread and is it anything more than worth a chuckle?

also, why is eli sanders not this man's official publicist yet?

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. All of his major fans appear to be complete fucking idiots. Online revolutionary? More than half of these people can't even explain in a coherent fashion why they love him, or why they think he's amazing.

He's not doing anything special. He isn't. This isn't interesting. It's irritating.

Ugh and Ugh 2 - I didn't find his videos appealing either but I bet the majority of his fans are teens and this sort of thing is a lot more kickass to kids than to most grownups, especially those of us old enough to be their parents. I recall the sort of stuff I thought was "rad" back in the day and this kid would have been right there with all the rest.

The Stranger has gone People Mag right before our very eyes.

I mean, fine so the story was a somewhat interesting feature about youth, alineation, the internet, but shouldnt that be enough?

Can you now get back to being an edgy alt weekly?

You either like or hate his videos. Eli certainly isn't a talent scout, nor was he trying to be.

While the story of a trapped 19 year old in a Southern town is an interesting one, it's the power of the internet, the power of the new social networking medium that I find fascinating. It's providing an outlet for Chris, and even better, it may provide the means to solve his problem and allow him to GET THW FUCK OUT.

Chris may well be one of the first to tap into this power of the YouTube and MySpace. I guarantee we will be seeing more of this "YouTube made famous" in the next coming years.

Kudos to The Stranger for getting to him first.

Evan @ 10 nailed it.

Also - people love a good story. This is reality tv without the middleman or advertising, unfiltered, straight to you. And if you can identify with that person on the other side, interact with them, feel them... that connection is the strongest fandom of all.

The cutting edge pioneers of this were the people who were uploading their HTML to geoshitties and tripod for their online journals in the late 90s, the webcammers, etc... but this is interactive (and near instantaneous) at a community level in a way that the world has never seen.

And if you don't get that, methinks your own brainpower is a bit suspect.

So Chris is special because he's gay (like almost everybody here at stranger), he's stuck in a small southern town (like every young gay man in a small southern town right now), and he has created a fanbase of retarded teen-boppers that will completely grow out of his tacky ass in a year or two? This is history, Eli. This is history, Evan.

The Internet as we know it is changed now, because of this pansy.

And no, he is not the first to become famous from YouTube and/or MySpace.

I just love when the opportunity cost of printing this story about an internet celeb and the power of the internet (which I was well aware of since 1996) is ignored. was this really the best use of space in the stranger? It's a good story but its not an uncommon one.

also fame and celebrity are simply matters that the uneducated and unhopeful concern themselves with. unless you are someone selling it.

and youd have to read only the stranger to believe chris might very well be the first to tap in this power of youtube and myspace...

When I was his age I was swooning over David Cassidy and Luke Skywalker. I hated my parents and my hometown and couldn't wait to get out. I was deeply in the closet and terrified to come out. Now in middle age, I look back at that period of my life with a certain amount of embarrassment. Probably, Cris Crocker will too, in twenty years.

I agree with Evan. The story isn't simply about Chris Crocker. Probably a lot of gay men have something similar they can relate to. Feeling isolated and trapped. Trying to get out. Acting out in ways we probably later find embarrassing.

The story is in large part about the internet, the YouTube and Myspace phenomena, and how one over-the-top flaming teenager has harnessed it. Proof is in SLOG yesterday. I've been a long time SLOG reader, and I've never seen anything like it. Within a few hours there was well over 200 comments (some Stranger staffer later went through and deleted a bunch of duplicate comments, thankfully). A few were from regular readers, but a vast majority were from people bounced over here from Crocker's Myspace page who have never been to SLOG before. This is an entirely new phenomena to SLOG. It's also interesting that Towelroad didn't get flooded with the same "Myspace freakout" (love that phrase, Matt). I'm kind of waiting. I'm wondering if Crocker will link to it, and if Towelroad will get bombarded by the Myspace train.

Chris Crocker is absolutley amazing! He has an amazing ability to find the "funny" in every aspect of life and create videos that portray his passion of entertaining. His fan base is probably more of the 14-25 age range, but isnt that the fan base of MTV? I don't expect those out of this range to be interested in the latest trl video, as well as the fact I dont expect them to be interested in Chris Crocker! But the way in which he reaches out to millions of people, daily through videos and bulletins on myspace, speaks highly on his ability to entertain. I am currently pursuing a masters degree and am very well educated. This being said, I am not ashamed to be a Chris Crocker fan!

alright for all the people who say "i can't stand his videos" why the hell do you take the time to watch them? if you hate the way he talks, hates the way he hates, hate him, don't pay attention to him. it's called acting & entertainment. he has passion for what he does, and he does it well. he has more fans than haters, so for the people who "can't stand his videos and him" but are constantly going out of your way to comment him 50 plus times saying how much you don't like him or watching his videos -- STOP WATCHING THEM. you obviously need to get a reality check, for every one hater he has 100+ fans. so stop, back off, and just wait until he's all over the t.v's.

@31: You're right that another MySpace wave is coming in... Chris just sent out another bulletin. Hang on!

But I actually think the MySpace folk know exactly what they're doing with this double and triple commenting.

It's definitely not proper Slog etiquette, I agree. But it seems to be a tactic they've learned on Chris's MySpace page.

There, they comment tons of times in a row to be sure they're heard, because on Chris's MySpace page the comments move so fast that if you don't comment a ton of times in a row you quickly get pushed down off the front page and are lost in the comment archives.

It's almost like they aren't even having a conversation. They're just repeating the same thing they say about him every day, wherever they can, as much as they can.

It's sad, really.

Eli, that sounds completely counterproductive (after all repeated posting by everyone ensures your comments get pushed off) but I wouldn't put it past the kids. Still, I doubt they're that savvy - posting really takes an absurdly long time here so I bet they're just hitting Post over and over until they see the result they're looking for.

First off, I don't see the problem. Chris Crocker is doing what he wants...just like the rest of us. You either choose to, or don't, to watch his stuff, read his stuff, or read the stuff about him. If you are taking time out of your "fantastic life" & schedule to do all this about "a stranger" who IS gay, and then you have a problem with that, then maybe the Problem lies in YOU. Not Chris. It's a free country. Yes I know. But if you "waste your time" watching his videos or reading stuff about him...Why were you SEARCHING for it in the first place? OBVIOUSLY something in YOUR LIFE is DULL and BORING and you need some "strangers" vent about gays and life and his 'i dont give a fucks' - to Fill that hole in Your life. And then you wanna come to Blogs and Paper posts and YouTube taking trash?! Bitch, YOU are the one viewing and reading and keeping up with this crap....Nobody else, but You!! Chris has his own Life...So get Yours! Ok?! You either SUPPORT HIM or you Don't...and if you Dont, then F^off! Quit tracking these posts. Quit viewing his 'new videos'...Just Quit. I, on the other hand, Support Chris. For any and everything he does. At least he has the NERVE to get on LIVE and tell you what the f^is up. ya heard?

Actually Evan, Mr. Poe said what I was thinking as I read over a lot of these comments. It's one thing if someone's diction is a bit off but elementary sentence structure is not too much to ask, even of a teen.

On the other hand, asking them not to be defensive, to understand the issues at hand, to know that viewing a couple of videos that were LINKED is not the same as seeking the videos unsolicited and viewing them repeatedly ,and to know that, hey, most of us queer-friendly adults have known someone just like Chris and don't find Chris to be unique or original is probably asking too much because they are kids and all this is new to them.

@57: If you want to "see news stories on actual news" (and only news, apparently, as there is "news" on other pages of the Stranger that you seem to have overlooked), perhaps you'd be better off with The Wall Street Journal, or The Christian Science Monitor, or many other publications that are not an alt-weekly that has never once purported to carry only news. This was simply a feature story, among other stories, and it is relevant to Stranger readers because we fostered a bit of a Chris Crocker love-in here on Slog awhile back, and because it is reasonable to think that the paper's target demographic would be interested in a story about the troubles of gay youth cut off from a friendlier urban area.

And as far as your "opportunity cost" is concerned, if running a story that piques interest in the paper and leads to more circulation and more site-hits, which in turn boost advertising rates and thus profits, then I think they made the most of their "opportunity."

Matt in Denver...wow. No wait, amazing! I would have thought there were more as well. Oooh, what about the original post?

It is kind of fun to find the usual slog commentary amongst the flotsam. Makes reading a bit more engaging.

Posted by Nay | May 31, 2007 1:49 PM
69

If it loses me as a reader but gains clicks one time from a bunch of kids who think I dislike Crocker cause he's gay, is that really better?

losing an established reader because you start putting out fluff pieces about a gay kid in the south is a good thing? How many of the people that click here are going to continue to come here?

And if the stranger didnt have any purpose or direction (self realized of course) you could argue they arent maximizing their advertising revenue enough because they simply arent posting enough of this populist fluff.
Editorial control is a balancing act.

Also the idea that this article advances something unknown to stranger readers is laughable. "OMG THAT POOR BOY, HAVING TO LIVE IN THAT CONDITION AROUND THOSE PEOPLE! THE HORROR!"

As an article on the power of the internet it would be fascinating but the article really didnt breach that enough.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | May 31, 2007 2:03 PM
70

@69: As per usual, you are so wrong. You're really going to stop reading The Stranger altogether over one human interest story that didn't speak to you? Give me a break. You will keep reading the Stranger because you live in Capitol Hill and it is free and available and relevant to young people living in the city. One article will not change that.

One article can, however, introduce other people to the Stranger that otherwise may not have stumbled across it. Like that guy from South Africa, or the 42-year-old mom with kids who posted about liking Chris.

Just because someone may be familiar with the idea of a kid being oppressed in the small town in the South doesn't mean they don't want to read about it.

Also, no one accused you of homophobia. Just self-righteousness.

Posted by Aislinn | May 31, 2007 2:15 PM

Heh Aislinn, you're right. Slog commenter goes to kitchen, gets glass of iced tea, returns to find 100 Chirs Crocker kids sitting in chair, refusing to give back remote.

Posted by Lloyd Clydesdale | May 31, 2007 2:26 PM
72

I can stop reading any time I want, I just need good reasons like human interest stories to do so! Hence the water skiing squirrel comments. This kid is like a water skiing squirrel. Entertaining but of no real value or consequence to my life. Except HE HAS THE POWER OF THE INTERNETS!

and actually his fans are accusing me of homophobia when i am guilty of apathy and a desire to see better content in the stranger.

also they could also run other stories that could introduce new readers to the stranger. so what? Im sure a story about how much "emo kids" are awesome would have the same effect. the thing that annoys me about this story is that its more biographical than informational.

Bellevue Ave,

Your opinion holds value. I can't knock you for it. If you say it doesn't hold value to your life, then it doesn't. What I don't understand is how biographical isn't informative. Biographical is informative.

This piece has meaning to me. I also found it entertaining, which is added value for me. If anything, the response to this piece is informative.

@71: Point taken, but most of the kids will leave. Not ALL of his fans are like that - most of us were introduced to Chris by Dan, who is clearly the sort of "fan" that we can appreciate.

@72: The Stranger has always had human interest stories, and it will continue to have human interest stories. A drop in the bucket, so they say. Your "desire to see better content" is really a "desire to see things that have more to do with me." You're feeling displaced as a catered-to market, and I would be willing to bet that your complaints have more to do with that than any real ire toward to the Christ Crocker Phenomenon. The article is biographical because it is a profile of Chris Crocker, and Chris Crocker is worth profiling because of his internet notoriety and cinderella-story-in-the-making status. That you aren't personally interested in such things does not make this a bad story or a bad thing to write a story about.

i can easily evaluate the value of content independent of relavence of content to me. in fact if i was really feeling underserved i would demand specific alternative content. i dont have specific alternatives in mind but i also know i dont want to see advertisements for celebs presented as news or human interest.

the other thng is that i dont see a difference between him and other internet phenoms. theyre mundane boring real people just like you and me, who just happen to be more adept in advertising the less boring parts of themselves.

i guess the big qustion is who is served by this article. i view it almost as an advertisement for chris under the guise of journalism. eli's rep will improve if chris makes the leap to the mainstream and the story will improve those chances of that happening. at the same time the advertisement revenue will increase for a spot of time. part of the other reason i dont like it is the hitching of eli's star to chris and the overly glowing biographical characterization of chris. it just seems a bit one sided.

@77: Eli doesn't need to "hitch on" to Chris. He's intelligent, accomplished, and has established himself as a journalist. This also isn't an advertisement - Chris didn't contact The Stranger saying "Hey write about me, I need more Myspace friends!" Eli contacted Chris, because he had questions, as do other people - the type of people who would be interested in this story.

As to who is "served" by this article, did you read what Evan Luckey said at 74? This type of story is important to some people. Just because it isn't important to you does not mean that the paper somehow erred in deciding to run it.

I know Im not the final arbirter of whats fit to print but on the other hand I can call out an article that I view doesnt serve people well or in ways that could also be served in more valuable ways.

for instance a water skiing squirrel informs me of the talent of that squirrel, makes me laugh, and makes me wondering if the squirrel is treated humanely etc etc... should the paper run an article on the squirrel? does that article hold any real worth? does it make you think beyond the article?

before you get all relativistic on me i'd like to point out Eli's article only did that in a few parts and the rest was huge groupie bj.

Unless you want to ignore the blowback of other people too, im not alone in thinking that the time spent furthering this guys career intentional or not could be better spent elsewhere.

at the end of the day, do you want the paper to continue to run human interest adverts or one that sees that its kinda silly and panderous to do so.

Now that I've actually read the story I feel as if I can weigh in. While I do feel sorry for Chris, I do not feel sorry that he is still in his rural-whatever. As an adult, he can leave at any time. He can get a job, save up some money, and leave. I did. It's simple, really. And I was 17 when I did it.

It felt to me like in your piece, Eli, you were saying he can't leave or he's stuck. But nobody is truly stuck. People hitch hike. I can guarantee that with his fan following he also probably h as many places around America he could go stay. Couch surfing rocks!

Anyway, that's my take on it.

I did feel fairly sorry for him that his grandmother and grandfather are basically in denial. Quite sad, really, and also sad that there was ground rules you had to follow when speaking with his grandmother. It doesn't appear like you tried very forcefully to get her to speak about Chris being his naturally-gay self.

For the love of Courtney Love- If this article irritates you this much- take it to your diary.

I hardly think Eli's article was designed to make you feel sympathy for me. My living situation just so happens to play a factor in my life. Also, Keep in mind, he had no clue of my living situation when contacting me. It just wasn't the point of the story. It simply plays a role and as a writer, it was up to him to include the facts.

The real point of the article, In my opinion, is to shed light on the many possibilities the Internet presents, and frankly, what it has presented to me.

It is not a sob story, but goddamnit, if a story contains hardships, they shouldn't be left out for fear of misperception. If ANYTHING- it's a Cinderella story.

Which is interesting to the majority of the world, If you really want to know. ;)

if this article irritates me so much dont take it up with the person who produced it?

the question is why so much biographical southern info instead of so much more informative internet exposure info?

sure you want to build empathy for your point but you can overdo it. when the article is more about who the person is than what the person does, the initial idea of the article shifts.

it looks less like an exploration of what the person does. in fact he should have included more examples of people like you to say that you arent some strange example of the power of the internet, simply a more photogenic southern gay one.

but as it stands the article is one dimensional and the focal point of the internet's power is lost by the end.

Invasion of the wasted teens! aaagh!
To the ever-so lovely "hannah" at #15 I say this... I don't watch the videos, I watched "a" video. One. The one in the slog post. I watched it to find out why everyone thought this kid was so great. And then I commented.

I also don't get the "fans" that are praising his talent. What is his talent? Being an overly-flamboyant gay teen? And how exactly is he stuck in his little town? Plenty of kids, gay or straight, get out of their "unaccepting" hometowns. It's rough, it's not easy, but they do it. They make the sacrifices. Seems he's more content to stay on Grandma's comfy couch and just bitch about it to anyone who'll listen instead of getting off his ass and actually DOING something to change his situation.

Slacker nation, indeed.

Could you people be anymore cynical? It is extremely HARD to leave. And to say that it's easy is a slap in the face to those who did sacrifice and were successful in their attempt to leave. It's not easy. And it's fuckall scary. I don't know your story, but if it was easy for you to leave then you're a special case indeed and I bet your situation hardly compares to Chris's.

I hesitate to say this but why the hell not - I'll bet you're the person that comments to the homeless man on the street, "Get a fucking job."

And Chris IS doing something. That's what this story is about! He is producing videos, advertising and branding himself on the internet. He is taking interviews and talking to MTV reps.

/end rant

Chris, thanks for coming on here and chatting with us about it.

I still enjoyed the article - not as much as I did Eli's most recent article about that sex offender fella - but it was still interesting.

It provided depth to videos that I initially couldn't stand. After Dan Savage posted more and more of them it seemed that I, and others on here, simply started getting used to them.

My point was that Eli seemed to be trying to press a feel-sorry button for you. Like you were stuck and that the Internet was your only way out. It's not, and I just can't accept it.

I'm from a small-ass Idaho town and the first chance I had to flee to Hollywood I did it. I used all the money I could muster at 17 and I fled. It was totally worth it for the time I spent there.

It appears to me that Eli seems to have proposed you have a horrible existence where you live (many of us understand hardships in various forms, just because you're gay does not mean you have it any worse off than those of us who grew up in homes with poor alcoholic and drug-induced parents or those of us who were also taunted and attacked as children) when it appears that you're content to stay where you are unless you're famous.

Now, I believe you're already famous. I also believe that eventually some money will come to you for it.

But I simply don't have the sympathy for your "stuck here" plight that seems to be a part of this article.

That's all.

Also, I do disagree with the people on here who do not believe this is a story worth telling.

It quite obviously is for so many reasons. With the sheer volume of views on the videos, the celebrity factor already kicks in.

Factor in that this is The Stranger and this is the perfect publication for these prose.
