"Bush signed the veto with a pen given to him by Robert Derga, the father of Marine Corps Reserve Cpl. Dustin Derga, who was killed in Iraq on May 8, 2005. The elder Derga spoke with Bush two weeks ago at a meeting the president had with military families at the White House."

Then why did he tell them FOUR FRICKIN YEARS AGO!

Time to leave.

We have already spent - using borrowed money - more than it would cost to literally REPLACE all the imported oil from the Middle East we ever will import.

We could have used that money to build American supplies using solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, clean coal, hamster cages, don't care, time to get the HECK out of DODGE!

They tried these lines on us in Nam - and then we slaughtered more US soldiers for 8 more years of failure.

Pull out - NOW!

Ain't gonna get any easier ...

[p.s. unlike the Bushies, I spent 7 years in the Army ...]

Levislade @ 5,

Was the pen filled with Cpl. Dustin Derga's blood? Now that would have been some major shameless pandering. My guess is that Cpl. Derga would prefer to still be alive, but it looks like he'll soon have plenty more company in the Dead Troops Club.

We can always count on our Republican friends to be Maximum Assholes to the Extreme!

Here’s a perfect idea to make this clusterfuck even more fun:

Republican settlements on the Euphrates River!

It’s really a perfect idea, if you think about it. We’ll add a whole land dispute-apartheid-occupation dimension that’s somewhat lacking in the current conflict as well as cover for the oil companies to keep US troops there forever (or at least until the US is bankrupt).

Besides, Republicans will love it in Iraq. It’s ugly and hot as hell just like Texas and Florida where their right-wing brains got fried, there are no environmental or gun control laws and you can shoot whoever you want! Plus it's near all that Biblical shit they're always screeching about. Sounds like a conservative paradise.

I don't think the admin even considered this scenario. The way they rushed forward building our fortress embassy mega-complex, they have just assumed that some form of us-friendly government could be held in place with sufficient control of the country to allow us to capitalize on Iraqi oil.

"You gotta wonder who gains in the scenario of a middle east in complete chaos..."

If the war went well, we'd be looking at decades of rule by Bush-flavored Republicans. If it dragged on a bit, Bush would be assured reelection in 2004, since Americans don't unseat a wartime president. If it became a quagmire, the military industrial complex would continue to make piles of money. It was a can't lose proposition.

If I could see that way back when Bush started beating his chest in late 2002, I'm sure it wasn't lost on Cheney and Rove either.
