Slog - Comments on A Flower for Life

Near the middle of the Morrison Bridge in Portland is this sign: The simple drawing of a daffodil is supposed to make a suicidal person stop and think about the beauty of the known. He or she is on the brink and this flower makes them rethink the jump to the no-thing of the unknown. I can imagine certain people having the kind of mind that might look at this drawing and say "yes" to life, say "yes" to more of this world, this city of roses, this slow river which flows on to the largest ocean, and this bridge...

I pass the one on the Burnside bridge every day, and it makes me think of the awesome scene in 'The Host' where the guy about to jump points at the monster in the water and everyone says, "Huh? What are you pointing at?" and he says, "Idiots. Idiots to the end."

Comment by Billy

There's some of these on the Aurora Bridge. When I saw one, I thought I'd try to talk to someone.

When I got on the phone, it didn't even ring. Someone said, "huh?" then coughed. The voice, an old man's, next said, "so, what do you want now, Mr. Cauliflower?"

I told him I was feeling suicidal.

The old man coughed again. "I see," he went on. "Well, that's too bad."

"Well aren't you going to help me?"

"Hem? Oh, well of course."

After this I heard a loud hiss. I heard a woman say hello. The voice was sexy. "Would you like a blowjob?" she continued.

Indeed, this is the best remedy for suicidal thoughts.

That so did not happen. The phones on the Aurora Bridge connect to either the Crisis Clinic or 911.

It is about time they got phones on the bridge-they have been on the Golden Gate Bridge for years.
