9/11: Debunking the Debunkers

posted by on May 18 at 14:44 PM

What’s that mean? I don’t know, but it’s the name of a forum tonight at Town Hall. Lots of folks have their panties in a bunch about what actually happened on September 11, 2001. They think a Neo-con conspiracy may have been behind the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center. Are they correct? Are they insane? Are they paranoid delusional anti-authoritarian wing-nut crack heads? Like I said. I don’t know. However, I do know that when people suggest Americans might have had a hand in harming fellow citizens for political or financial gain and then covered it up—which we know has never happened before—seemingly sane folks lose their fucking minds.

Decide for yourself tonight at 7:30 p.m. when Dr. David Ray Griffin responds to critics of the so-called 9/11 truth movement. (Town Hall, 1119 8th Ave, doors at 6:30 p.m., $15 at the door.)

Of course it was a conspiracy. Because, you know, the Bush administration has done such a good job with everything else they've done. I have complete confidence in their ability to pull off a conspiracy like faking the attacks on WTC and the Pentagon. And not a single leak in almost 6 years. They've just pretended to be utterly incompetent in every other way ever since then just to throw us off track. Clever, those neo-cons.

Good point, SDA. Bush couldn't conspire to make a sandwich under his own power, and neither could any of his supposedly supergenius handlers.

If you go, print out this list and shout out the name of the logical fallacy when you hear it!

Yeah, they're all so stupid, but somehow they've done whatever they've wanted to, fucked everything up to their liking, and have committed crimes that that they will never have to pay for. It doesn't matter if Bush can make a sandwich himself or put a sentence together, his administration have pretty much done whatever the hell they've wanted to do

"anti-authoritarian"? Perish the thought.

Will Rosie O'Donnell be there?

dotdotdot: no, Bush hasn't accomplished any of his own goals. You think he WANTED to get bogged down in Iraq? None of his long-term legislative goals have been met. Social Security and Roe v. Wade are still in place. I know it's popular to say "war for oil", but we'd have a lot more oil out of Iraq if we'd just bribed Saddam like everyone else did; the oil infrastructure is heavily damaged along with everything else. Bush wasn't TRYING to destroy New Orleans, or the US's military capacity.

Though I suppose I can see why you might think so.

What Bush has "accomplished" is to prove that government by not paying attention makes things fall apart. This is a refutation of some key conservative beliefs, but it's hardly their master plan.

What Bush has done is to show that being someone you might "want to have a beer with" is not a better choice than a "nerd" with a lot of experience.

Oh and they totally shot a missile at the WTC, because you know, when your about to ram a plane into a building it helps to shot off a missile first.

Fnarf,

You’re assuming that Bush and the Republicans have conventional goals, such as working for the benefit of most Americans and upholding their duty to protect our Constitution, which have been miserable failures.

On the contrary, if their true goals are to enrich themselves and their army of cronies and sycophants, then their success has been simply astonishing and unparalleled since the Gilded Age. They’ve also pushed the country so far to the right that it’s virtually unrecognizable and totally out of step with the rest of the civilized world. I mean seriously, who ever thought we’d see non-stop spying and surveillance of US citizens, torture, permanent war and people held for years without charges or trial? It's appalling, but they've succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

The Republicans wanted to destroy the government. They've done a pretty good job so far, but, unfortunately for them, they weren't able to complete the job before they were tossed out of office.

The republicans have been utterly successful at permanently pushing the United States further to the right. And they've been succeeding at it since late 1970s. As big of fuck ups as they are, the Bush administration have succeeded at making this country more authoritarian and less humanitarian.

The Bush administration have enriched themselves and severely damaged the democratic system- if the goal was to create a more right wing culture and a more centralized state, they've succeeded. The Democrats have been all too happy to carry out the economic "reforms" themselves, and they've clearly moved just a little more to the right on the cultural front.

Bush and co. are not enriching themselves personally anywhere NEAR what they could do and have done in the private sector. Bush made a frigging FORTUNE digging dry wells for his "oil company", and another for his baseball team (which he had approximately the same amount of control over as a child with one of those fake "steering wheels" mounted on his child seat (do they still make those?)). Cheney earned what, a hundred million from Halliburton?

There is a long tradition of honorable public service in this country by wealthy businessmen, both R and D. Bush is following upon that tradition, in the role laid out for him by his daddy, but he forgot about the "honorable" part. His administration has gone to shit even -- no, especially -- by Republican standards. He now heads up the most debased political party in the history of the United States -- or maybe just since the 1860s Democrats, if you're feeling charitable. I'm not. The sad thing is, most non-fuckhead Republicans (the few that are left) know that's true. That's not success by anyone's measure. He has irreparably damaged almost every part of government you can think of. We will be suffering the ill affects of the Bush administration for far longer than Nixon's.

Dingdingding! Griffin draws a nice crowd of gray-haired pony-tails.

Fnarf: Obviously the idea of success and enrichment I'm talking about represents a massive failure of government and the administration. But have you thought that perhaps the failure of democracy might in fact be the ultimate goal of the neocons? Not a conspiracy mind you, but a certain distaste for democratic institutions, oversight, human rights, and accountability. What the hard right wants more than anything else is total control of the state and everyone in it, and weakening democratic institutions is helpful to that end. They've set a radical precedent.

Obviously, I meant success ironically. The administrations is completely incompetent, but if you're of a natural authoritarian bent, weakening a democracy might be considered a victory of sorts.

Fnarf: Cheney is still profitting from Halliburton, don't be silly. Also, the administration's "success" has been in eroding government, the constitution and human rights, as well as increasing wealth for the rich. The goal has been to fuck shit up completely and I say they've been amazingly successful. We'll be feeling their handy work in our sore asses for generations to come.
