Fuck 2001. And fuck 1995 while you're at it. Today is about THIS SEASON. And now that we have TWO players from the mighty Port Orchard High Class of '96, we are invincible.

Or, uh, not. But we should win at least 75 games. That's cool, right? I remember when 75 games was an unattainable goal, for decades.

No one cares about baseball. Seattle is not a baseball town, it was only interested when the Mariners are a couple of good seasons.

Maybe if we built them an even newer, even better stadium that no one else is allowed to use then they'll do better. Maybe a hovering cloud stadium with lasers.

I hope you are happy with Jeff Weaver. He was the clutch with the Cards late last season, but you never know which Jeff Weaver is going to show up....

Uh, we know exactly which Weaver is going to show up, and "happy" is not the word we're looking for. "Clutch late last season" is about as valuable as "had a couple of good starts in June '04". Weaver sucks, full stop.

Fnarf, don't harsh my mellow (Mellow = already drinking a beer and cheering on the Rays and, yes, Carl Crawford, Rocco Baldelli, Elijah Dukes, Akinori Iwamura et al vs. the Yankees on ESPN - readying myself to head down to opening day). I hope some of the M's doings will make you clap your hands without your realizing that you're doing it.

Mike - I'll take all the dream-Weaver I can get. His six scoreless against the Cubs on Sunday was heartening.

gls - you beat me to it.

Bradley - I've come around from my apparently lackluster signing malaise to think that the M's - if they play hard (and Beltre's Spring is a great sign) - will have a strong season.

Mariners: NO MORE DANCING GROUNDSKEEPERS! It must stop, beginning today.

Sorry to mix up your high schools, Kitsappers. I'm just annoyed at having to suffer through TWO of your products on the team -- though at least the new guy, Ellison, appears to be able to play a little baseball, unlike Wille F. Bloomquist.

Lloyd, I'm sorry to harsh your mellow. But you know what they say -- an optimist can only be disappointed, while a pessimist can be pleasantly surprised.

What I'm really rooting for is for them to lose their first dozen games 12-0, and get Hargrove fired, and then stage a miraculous comeback under their new manager: me.

fnarf, if you manage -- a slog poll would give you the mandate -- trot me the christ out there for those situations where john halama is toast and there's no one left in the pen. i'm a submariner with a 40mph fastball and no break on my slider. "Islands in the stream" will be my song for the PA.

John Halama appears to be out of a job; he's not with his 2006 club the Orioles anymore at least. But sure, you can my Go-To-Guy when we're already down by seventeen.
