The Week in Geek

posted by on April 27 at 14:20 PM

OMFG! It’s the Stranger’s first ever Week in Geek!

Geek quiz: If you know why this photo is funny, you win.

VOIP safe, for now — Appeals court issues a stay in Verizon v. Vonage, but the future of cheap internet phone calls is in doubt. Fuck Verizon.

China scans students — Chinese college uses fingerprint scanners to take roll, attendance rises to 95 percent.

Continuing their strategy of entering markets 5 years late (see Zune, the), Microsoft takes aim at Adobe’s Flash.

Storage Porn — Ooh, baby.

Despite the inexcusable use of the word “faire”, Maker Faire participants make cool shit: like a life-sized version of the classic mousetrap board game that drops a 2-ton safe instead of a plastic basket.

Happy Geekiversary! — As Star Wars turns 30, thousands get painful reminder of just how long they’ve been living in their parents’ basement.

Paparazzi got you down? Tired of your random prancings around town ending up on your idiot friends’ myspaces? Get yourself some FlickrBlockrs!

Command of the Week: sudo lsof -i | grep LISTEN

And finally, here’s Jodie Foster—in teenaged triplicate—singing Je T’attends Depuis la Nuit des Temps.

Is it the "404 page not found" error message refernce?

I think "porn storage" would be more accurate.

@1 - Yup. I should also add that if you think it's actually funny, you lose.

@2 - All storage is porn storage.

sudo lsof -i | grep LISTEN

There are lots of other variants, depending on your OS. "netstat -a | grep LISTEN" should work on both Linux and MacOS even without sudo access. On Linux, you can also do "sudo netstat -lp" to get ports listening and the processes they're attached to. On Windows, you can do "netstat -a | find "LISTEN" " (the quotes around LISTEN are required for Windows's find command).

@7 - I include the sudo because many (if not most) servers run under root, so running the command without sudo won't really give you the full story.

That Jodie Foster video reminds me of the time when I was watching A Very Long Engagement for the second or third time and realized suddenly that Jodie Foster was in it.

Nice 404 reference but it wasn't really funny.

I like how page boy-Jodie is tapping her left foot while the others tap their right in the end. It makes the triplets seem more authentic. Heh.

IDK, that Jodie Foster vid is creepy. But now I know she's been speaking fluent French for years. Good for her.

Etymology, from Wikipedia:

It is commonly believed that the word "geek" originates with side-show "circus geeks" — performers at carnivals who swallow various live animals, such as live insects. Sometimes this would extend to biting the heads off of snakes, chickens, or other living animals.

I am still in love with Jodie Foster and perhaps even more now. I can't explain it, maybe because this is so incredibly geeky.

Candleshoe-era Jodie Foster! Candleshoe, by the way, is the BEST MOVIE EVER.

She attended the French School in the Westwood (UCLA) area of Los Angeles. Essentially, all of her middle and high school classes were taught in French. So, yeah, she's been fluent for quite some time. I think half her family lives in France now. But even then, a young dyke in training - butch clothing and loves songs sung to herself. Kidding.

@22 - Oh no. I can't believe I posted something online that was online somewhere else first. How embarrassing for me.

You do realize that this is the whole point of digg, no?
