speaking of "regrades"...I'm a little obsessed with the Denny PRE-grade, I can't look across the regrade area and get a mental image of what it's scale. Was the hill as big as Queen Anne? or what, exactly? I've found some scraps on line of what was where, but no exact before and after pics. I don't FEEL it's original scale (tho' it looks HUGE) in the deconstruction pics/postcards...and that Denny Park (I think) was kept at pre grade levels till 1950 (?) just makes me even more fixated on the butte that is now a plain.

Paul Dorpat knows all. I bet he has 360-degree photos of all of this.

Actually, I get the sense that something has been created, or started. That this mere citzen protested, got noticed, and didn't end up in prison, is a sign that China's civil society is emerging. It's a small sign, sure, and just one of many, but it's still progress.

To be completely fair though, plenty of people have been forcibly evicted, or at least forced out financially, to make way for development in the United States, especially minorities and the lower classes. It doesn't make it right, but it's fairly universal in
"developing" or industrializing countries to push people out in the name of "progress." Every American city has a story like that; L.A. alone has hundreds. Seattle is doing that right now the "nice and polite" way.

But I have to hand it to that woman for standing up to it.
