While we're copy editing, how about referring correctly to the street? It's NE 50th Street. And are you sure you're heading east toward I-5? Is this place in Wallingford or the U District?

i dont know. i have been apart of many collectives/co ops/hippie houses, and with that "laid back" feel comes a certain amount of responsibility. you can have an open door, but you still need to know who is in your house.

and yes, the cops probably will harass you. thats why you should either a: not do anything illegal, or b: not give them a reason to harass you in the first place.

The house sounds like a fun place to live and hang out with interesting people. And I was surprised to see that the officer was so reasonable, at least at the time (I have a hunch that the presence of a Stranger writer (not just an intern) may have influenced his demeanor). Nevertheless, the concern the Officer expressed is real . . . for some reason, I instantly thought of the horrific Capitol Hill murders when I first read this post and was anticipating a terrible end to an otherwise fascinating story (such are the days of our lives).

Please note for the record that the neighborhood where the house is located is nice (although unaffordable for too many) and filled with a great mix of people, from students to professionals, gay couples, and even the elusive straight couple with and without CHILDREN (!). The only thing that distinguishes the street on which this home is located is the presence of roaring, screeching, honking, billowing traffic on I-5, 50 metres from the front door. Otherwise, all of the domesticated fags and lesbos in the city would snap these houses up in an instant and make them fabulous (and I say that as a domesticated homosexual, slaving away over home improvements).

I know a number of good, solid homeowners (gay and straight) who have moved out of the U District in the past few years because the neighborhood has gotten out of control. So while I'm not crazy about the heavy hand of the cops, realize that a lot of people are sick of the atmosphere.

None of the people who lived there had any problems with kids partying in their own homes, as long as they kept it to a dull roar on weekdays. But it so often spills outside and you end up with mattresses burning in the street, mini-riots, things thrown out the windows at cars, fratboys shouting rude/threatening remarks are people passing by, broken windows, glass in the street, etc etc.

Grow up a little bit, treat your neighbors with some respect, and you'll find they treat you nicely in return.

Bob, I have lived in the U District for the past five and half years. I have NEVER seen a mattress burned or anything else for that matter (thinking of Boulder, Colorado, maybe??). Two years ago, there was an incident where a car got tipped over.

Near the frats, it's loud with parties. If you get off frat row, it's really not that bad. Moving next to frats and complaining it's loud is like moving next to an airport and complaining it's loud. Oh, right, people do that too.

I am highly, highly skeptical that "things have gotten worse" in the U District in the past five years. Show me some proof or GTFO.
