It was only after taking Zoloft for five months that the reality of Xenu revealed itself to me.

And I developed a taste for baked clams*.

Scientology/smientology. I would also like to know if he was prescribed meds and if he was still on them.

Those people might come in handy at Virginia Tech right now.

OH WAIT.

For some reason I always think of Christian Science when I hear of that hollywood cult. Anyway, near Group Health there's a very cool building that hosts CS services. Nice quotes on the walls by Mary Ellen Eddy? something like that, the founder of CS. and also really nice choral music. My wife and I were only there a few times as we're not diehard believers. there's so many interesting churches in seattle. We pick a different one usually about once a month. Right, elswinger, smeintology.

It was anti-depressant drugs that caused the massacre?

Great. Glad that's cleared up.

Guns don't kill people, anti-depressant drugs do.

Listen, if I wasn't on anti-depressants, I'd be dead. I was nevr into external violence. But thank God, I wasn't raised under Christian Science. Or things might have got real ill.

Anti-depressants work for a lot of people and not for others. I know some organic only people do not approve, but some of them do not approve of any modern (read that effective) forms of medicine. I think the fact that medication actually works really bugs them, but in truth they do work very well.
I have been helped by taking a pill and others can be helped too. I tried so called natural cures like St. Johns Wort, but it was not effective. Paxil was effective so I highly recommend talking to your doctor and considering using an anti depressant if you are unable to pull out of a long bout of depression.

Let's be clear: not taking antidepressants where indicated is strongly associated with suicidal tendencies, and even homicidal tendencies. Depressed people don't just kill themselves.

But then again, it's not as if the Scientology people would know anything about suicide or murder.

Whoops.

My mistake.

Y'all are confusing the Church of Scientology (L. Ron Hubbard, Tom Cruise et al.)with the Church of Christ, Scientist (Mary Baker Eddy, founder). I don't know much about Christian Scientists except that they have a pretty good newspaper; but I do know that the Scientologists are whack.

All i can say is that for a majority of people medication helps. Sometimes people don't like meds that's cool. there are many other treatments available. But if a person poses an obvious danger then they may need more then one method.
Recently in Alberta (that's a province y'all) a law was passed to have the government administer anti-psychotic medication to mentally ill patients who require medication but cannot administer it to themselves regularly.
At first this may seem as the government telling people what to do with their lives. But this legislaiton was actually lobbied by the schizophrenic society of alberta.

mental health is a complex field and one therapy or treatment will not work for everyone but the key is to try. The key is too listen.

@9 - thank you for your post - i was raised in christian science and while not religious now i honestly do feel blessed to have been raised in a very loving religion that did not thrive on the guilt factor.

outside of the christian science monitor (the paper that #9 referred to) most people's knowledge of CS is that of "oh you're the ones who don't go to doctors" - and yes, that's true.

CS is unfortunately only heard about when you see a news story about a family that takes the religious belief of metaphysical healing (not going to medical doctors) to extremes. nowhere in mary baker eddy's writings nor in church by-laws, etc. does it threaten members with any type of ex-communication/penalty/etc. for going for medical help - when my brother fell and split his side open when we were kids, he got taken in for an exam/stiches.

okay i'm rambling. gotta get back to work...but always willing to talk about CS if anyone has questions.
