City So You Wanna Open a Strip Club?

Posted by on April 30 at 17:26 PM

There’s a meeting at City Hall in, oh, about four minutes to discuss new zoning proposals for Seattle strip clubs. Wherever you see yellow on this map…

…you can locate a new strip club. I spot a dab of yellow near the former location of Deano’s/Chocolate City, I think, and there seems to be a little smudge of yellow at what looks like Pike and I-5, which might be a nice spot for a gay strip club. But the yellowest parts of town are practically in Elliott Bay or the ship canal. Which makes me wonder… why not just legalize strip clubs on barges, a la “floating” casinos in Iowa, Alabama, Louisiana, etc.? It would make for a livelier waterfront, that’s for sure, and politicians wouldn’t have to take responsibility for okaying strip clubs in any existing neighborhoods.

Hmmm...

I know there isn't much yellow on that map, but it's amazing to me how the neighborhoods of Wedgewood, Sandpoint, Laurelhurst, Madison Park, Leschi, Magnolia, and Green Lake are completely stripclub-free. Any neighborhood that isn't stinkin' rich has at least a smudge or two of yellow. Are there really that many schools in those rich neighborhoods?

2

so what exactly happened to Deano's/Chocolate City?? Did they finally get shut down?

3

Yeah, but it looks like you won't be able to get too or from Magnolia w/out going through a regular red light zone.

4

Let's just make this simple: If a place can serve booze by the drink, they can have boobies on display.

We act like without strict regulation, every bar in Seattle would have "exotic dancers", yet we know from experience that that is not true. We allow gay bars, yet not every bar is gay. We allow sports bars, yet not ever bar is a sports bar. We allow kareoke, yet not every bar is full of people warbling "Freebird"

I'm a fan of government, but I like good government, and this ain't it.

Strip clubs are no more of a nuisance than nightclubs and should be zoned accordingly. Moral objections to nudity should be given no more weight in our zoning laws than moral objections to drinking. Or homosexuality. Or abortion.

Peter - I really want to like you, and I want you be the unifying leader that Seattle desparately needs. It's not too late - just let this sleeping dog lie.

6

Peter drafted the legislation in response to the dumb/lazy/mean-spirited proposal from the mayor to create a strip club zone in the South End. While it may not be perfect, this is a good alternative to creating another blight in an already beleagured area. And I don't trust people like Jean Godden to just let sleeping dogs lie next time Nickels's people start up their stupid red-light district campaign again.

7

Ooh, I'm going to make a funny now.

Knickerson Street

Did you see what I did? Oooh, I can be so naughty!

8

I applaud these areas. SPU is going to have to surrender to the booty given its proximity to the largest yellow blobs.

9

@6: "Peter drafted the legislation in response to the dumb/lazy/mean-spirited proposal from the mayor"

Right, and Nickels had his ass handed to him in the election. So why is Peter now pushing a slightly less dumb/lazy/mean-spirited proposal? How about a sensible proposal, or no proposal at all?

Having grown up in Vegas where strip clubs are the norm I can honestly say that I don't give a shit if Seattle ever builds one again. The prohibition might be a stupid waste of time, but so are strip clubs. I can't imagine an issue I care less about.

11

So, is there a copy of that map that actually shows SE Seattle and West Seattle? How about one that's big enough to see some details? (Or will Beacon Hill be as strip-club-free as View Ridge?

12

Yes, it's here:

13

Beacon Hill has a few yellow spots: down south along MLK, one up at Columbia by the golf pro shop and Vietnamese grocery stores, and then a big yellow spot up north by Rainier between Massachusetts and College. But I kind of doubt that anyone will open any strip clubs here. I mean, no one comes here, there's nothing here, there's not even a freaking Starbucks, there's no place to get a decent goddamn glass of wine, many of our restaurants (like El Quetzal) and markets (like Seattle Supermarket) don't even sell alcohol, this place is so dead that I can't imagine a strip club opening up. God, I feel like I would welcome it at this point. Beacon Hill can't be a bedroom community forever. How about a little bit of life down here?

14

There is a pretty large chunk of Ballard available and it looks like all of Stone Way (where I live) is up for grabs, but the clubs will have to fight all the new condos and the upcoming QFC at the corner of 40th and Stone Way.

15

Beacon Hill is a wonderful neighborhood if you are looking for a gas station, hair salon or tax accountant.

But, it should be said, we DO have Java Love and Galaxy for coffee (bookends, if you will, on either side of the "business district"). Java serves alcohol and has a great restaurant. Galaxy will soon start serving booze.

16

CVD -- I'd count the fabulous 'international foods' aisle at the Red Apple in the positives column as well.

17

Shouldn't the "strip clubs are okay" areas be labeled pink?

18

Pink is for girls.

19

Good...now i can open my Hooters rip off for the ladies and the polesmokers:

Peckers

Clingy running shorts are mandatory for all employees....but no jocks...i want floppage....
