So Much More to Love

posted by on April 30 at 15:19 PM

There’s a headline up at Drudge

Lesbians twice as likely to be obese

LESBIANS are twice as likely as heterosexual women to be overweight or obese, which puts them at greater risk for obesity-related health problems and death, US researchers said. The report, published in the American Journal of Public Health, is one of the first large studies to look at obesity among lesbians.

Keep reading and you discover this…

“The results of these studies indicate that lesbian women have a better body image than do heterosexual women,” [researchers] wrote.

Finally! I've been scratching my head for years wondering if I was the only one who noticed that most of the lesbians around are fat. What a sad acknowledgment.

Put down the pizza—sisters—and have some sex!

Sort of a long way to go about calling Mary Cheney fat, isn't it? I mean, why not just say... "Mary Cheney is totally fat."

The lesbians I see on TV or in magazines aren't particularly fat.

See, queerness causes obesity. Don't pretend God isn't telling us something here.

Does somebody have a calculator? I'm trying to determine how we can pay for a new 520 bridge by offsetting the city's power costs with cheap, abundant, lesbian fat. It's so incredibly slow burning we might be asking ourselves why we ever burned anything else!

elswinger, i know what you mean. every porn site i look at has skinny lesbians with long blonde hair, high heels, french nails, and waxed within an inch of their lives!

and because i look at a LOT of porn sites, this appears to be a faily good cross-section of america's lesbian population. therefore, drudge is FOS.

QED.

This is as surprising as a study telling us it is dark at night.

Matt Drudge, self-hating gay antihero of the interwebs.

positive body image = ok to be overweight? wtf?

I think there's a difference between obesity and a few extra pounds because you're OK with body image.

Obesity is not synonymous with "healthy."

Who is the most popular (known) lez on TV right now? Rosie? She doesn't look like she's missed too many meals, ya know?

I suspect some obese women choose female partners because it's easier to find a woman who will look past her body.

And all this time I have been wasting my time exercising, counting points on Weight Watchers, going to the gym when I could just become straight to get skinny. I think if the religioud right used this to convert people it might just work. Go straight and get skinny!

This study sounds pretty fishy to me. It would be like saying there was study that showed gay men are really thin and weak.

#17: Ellen is most popular and she is pretty swelty as is her hot ass girlfriend.

...pussy has far more calories than you think. To prove it, compare straight men's obesity rates to gay men. You'll see much the same pattern.

You are all so fucking typical. A thread just to have an excuse to bash overweight women. Eat shit, bastards. Who gives a rip if this stuff is on Drudge? It's bait for inciting the bile you're spewing here.

I'm not saying that all lesbians are obese. I'm not saying all straight men are obese. However, @ 23, you may have made a unique discovery...

To deal with the actual article, I would not be at all surprised if lesbians had a better body image than poor het women who think they have to fit that ridiculous Barbie-doll type to attract men.

(I don't know many obese lesbians, by the way. Some are a bit overweight but I doubt it's in any greater proportion than of women as a whole.)

Point: The medical definition of obesity is a joke. It includes a lot of people in perfectly good health, like those guys from strongman competitions that pull winnebagos and shit.

Also, the guy who mentioned straight men being much likelier obese than gays is hella right. In Japan, for example, the first thing people think of a muscleguy is that he's a mo. Google Cho Aniki. Heh.

Positive body image in some cases may lead to laziness about physical fitness, but it's better than the alternative, which is seriously mental illness.

Right... Because anyone would prefer a coronary bypass to therapy. Right?

Maybe they have it wrong. Maybe being fat causes lesbianism (instead of the other way around) in which case it could be chalked up to evolution at work to keep fatties from breeding…

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I would call this junk science. What a bunch of malarky.

The article has very little detail about the study except to say that in the study group (which we have no detail about) women who identify as lesbians have a 2% higher rate of obesity. The researchers say they don't believe, (but it is inconclusive as to whether) BMI's are higher in self identified lesbians because of increased muscle mass.

It just goes to show you that these kinds of studies taken out of context and without further review can be used to discriminate against a group of people. What I find interesting is how quickly this little band of SLOG posters jumped on this to leap to all kinds of conclusions about lesbians and to make all kinds of charged up and derogatory conclusions.

"Point: The medical definition of obesity is a joke. It includes a lot of people in perfectly good health, like those guys from strongman competitions that pull winnebagos and shit."

While this is technically true, Christopher, you'll be hard pressed to convince me that anywhere near a majority of folks with a BMI high enough to qualify as "obese" are only that way because they're built like world champion powerlifters.

This reminds me of how in high school all the drama people take the opportunity to pick on the AV club along with the jocks and the cheerleaders. What's with the cruelty bandwagon? Whether or not you believe obesity is a choice, fat people are still human.
