By a 10-Point Margin, Slog Readers Prefer Having the Gay Pride Parade Downtown

Last week we ran a poll asking whether you thought Seattle’s Gay Pride Parade should be held on Capitol Hill or in the streets of downtown. Over 1,000 people voted before the poll closed on Sunday. Here are the results:

Okay, but how many of those 55% will bother to help make it happen downtown? Probably .000001% that might equal someone's left pinky toe.

These numbers should actually be read as a victory for Capitol Hill. I suggest that we proceed immediately with the Broadway plan.

So is this another non-binding resolution vote that we did? Those are apparently in vouge these days. The viaduct, the congress ect ect.

Quick! Someone call Stefan Sharkansky! He can explain why Capitol Hill won handily.

No one gives a shit about internet votes. People voted last year when 100 times as many of them showed up for the downtown parade. Whatever the self-described 'leaders' of the 'community' on Capitol Hill say in their press spin, we will see June 24th where the incredibly varied and many different groups and individuals in the LGBT community go. My prediction is that 2007 will look a lot like 2006 - a poorly organized, poorly attended parade on Broadway put on and attended by the old school haters who need to be involved in a fight to feel relevant, and the official, City supported, Community supported, well attended, well organized (we hope!) parade sponsored by The Stranger and organized by real volunteers trying to do the best they can for the community with no other self-interest. Downtown is the better venue, will be the better parade, and represents Pride coming into a new importance in Seattle. The part of the scene that likes to party at bars will go to the hill after to do just that.

If a parade on Capitol Hill brings in more money than a parade downtown, you're nuts to do it downtown.

If it is visibility is your main concern, you needn't worry, we all know there are lots of gay people in Seattle.

Amidst the usual cries of having 'outgrown' Capitol Hill, I wonder how much more moving Downtown had to do with ego than with practicality. There is certainly a mix of both. The question is, is it a 70-30 mix or a 50-50 mix, and which way does the discrepancy go?

Given the obviously opininated editorial stance of the Stranger on the issue - I see a 10% split here as an obvious 50/50. That's what it seems to me to be in the people I talk to - that's what I hear on the street. Can we admit that the community is evenly divided here ans stop anyone else from proclaiming victory?

Obviously, what we need to do is hold it in Bellevue then.

Given our obvious slant, I'm sure the pro-hill folks poured in and voted. In fact, I know they did.

Please cancel it. Fat lesbians on motorcycles, stupid fags in diapers, the lowest level of the gay strata on parade is not any where near the intelligent, fit, healthy gay people I know and love.
The parade just increases the publics dislike of all things gay. Have a parade with normal, healthy, happy gay people and the world might begin to accept the gays.
Continue with the leather idiots and no wonder people think gays are freaks, look what we show them.

yeah...lets just put all those 'freaks' somewhere where we don't have to look at them, like forced labor camps or Madagascar!!

more power for nacho cheese colored, artificially muscled, identically hair styled, Bravo watching, It boys with A/F caps, Prada shoes and Range Rovers...you know, the 'normal' ones so prominently featured in the ads in gay magazines...they represent the real Gay community and give back sooooooo much....

I remeber that dance troupe of asian girls that always work their little butts off and do amazing routines, I remember the poiticians that ride in the parade and show their support, I remember non-profits like Gay City who do good things for people in need, I remember PFLAG and their stickers and their support and countless others. Its a free speech march and segments from the enitre community are represented, whats intersting to me is that gay people like str8 people seem to only remember Dykes on bikes, the drag queens and the guys in chaps.......

I remember when Pepperidge Farm made a damn fine cookie....ah, yes...

I also remember the almost complete lack of floats in the parade...the beer trucks...the fire truck with the dyke firewimmen but never any hunky firefags...

i remember the taste of madeleines, the slightly bitter almond bite and the crunch and the Girl in the long flowing white linen dress, just out of reach...

oh, sorry...i seemed to have wandered off into some Proust....

The only thing these numbers prove is that there is no concensus on where the parade should be held. A 55/45 split amongst Stranger readers means that nobody can claim to have a "mandate" fron the community about where to march.

I don't care where we march. I just want to fix the broken machinery so we don't have to go through this every year forever and ever and ever...

OMG. @7: Self-serving? The only reason SOaP is having the parade is to charge a huge entry fee and pay off last year's debt and then disband. Don't confuse a parade downtown produced by SOaP with altruism. I am a HUGE fan of a parade downtown and all that it symbolizes, but I am a bigger opponent of fixing SOaP's gross error in judgment on the backs of our local and national community groups and non-profits, who all pay the fee to march with no festival this year.

@18: Don't hate, congratulate! As a volunteer for a LGBT organization, it is but for the generosity of those who have done well that my organization can do the important work it does in this community. You underestimate them greatly. Agreed, they often do not volunteer their time and energy, but they do write checks. We all have our strengths and our place in the progressive movement.

@20: Thank you for reason. It's not the downtown parade that I hate. It is the departure from Pride and the good works that come of it that I loathe. Without the festival, the good works don't follow--our organizations need the festival to make meaningful contact with the citizenry and our people. The parade generates little other than visibility and a spectacle (which is all well and good and important to a degree, because it continues to show that our community is going to push forward against ridiculous notions of morality and for equality). On the other hand, the festival, which SOaP has abandoned this year in order to pay off its debt (and the LGBT Center is going to produce), is critical to the continued viability of the work-horses of the community, our non-profit organizations, who are double cheated by SOaP this year (a ridiculously expensive entry fee and no festival to seek new funds, members, or volunteers).

Really, I'm not a cynic when it comes to Pride. I have been to many around the world, and I always love Seattle's most for some odd reason. I want a parade and I want a festival and I want cohesiveness, and SOaP can no longer provide it. I want people to focus on the importance of Pride in today's political and ecomonic climate, which is to support those organizations that do so much for the LGBT community, particularly in Seattle where visibility and acceptance is secondary, mercifully.
