Arts Osama bin Laden was Right

…Americans are immersed in nonsense bourgeois distractions.

I mean, check this out: A Can cover night?

Can, if you don’t know, and it’s likely you don’t, was an early 70s experimental rock band from West Germany. Once upon a time, they had an album called Tago Mago that was supposedly influential.

A Can cover night?!? How do you even cover a Can song; much less have the time to learn a Can song? These songs, freak out improvs, typically clocked in between 8 and 20 minutes.

Fellow weirdoes! We are going down the rabbit hole if we are covering Can, and going to see Can cover nights.

Having said that: Burn on Osama bin Laden. That’s why Capitol Hill and freak zones like it all over the USA are great. I hope someone does “Paperhouse” from Tago Mago.

1

there was a faust cover night a few weeks back...

2

Mother Sky is a pretty killer song, especially as covered by Th' Faith Healers.

3

The only reason that I know about Can is that Spoon is named after one of their songs.

4

I just read about a CAN night in Manchester and London England. Malcom Mooney and Damo Suzuki ( both ex vocalists of CAN) joined local musicians from the area and did an entire night of their music. At first I thought this was the same tour but no it's a Seattle only thing independent from the original vocalists.

CAN was playing on the stereo yesterday at The Globe cafe. I'm sure all you hipster scenesters go there for lunch. I've gotten to be good friends with the cook, the guy with the mohawk. He always tells me about the bands he's seen the night before. Now everytime I go in, I ask:

How was it?

6

Hipster scenesters don't go to the Globe.

Thank god.

7

someone must cover 'haleluwah' in its brilliant entirety. this is worth ditching work early for.
'all gates open' would be cool too.

8

I'm going just to see how bad it is. I never cared for Th'faith Healers cover of Mother Sky but I did like the Komeda cover of Mushroom. I'm hoping someone covers Father Cannot Tell.

9

I'm hoping someone covers Father Cannot Tell.

That's "Father Cannot Yell."

Kendra Smith (ex-Opal) does an excellent cover of "She Brings the Rain," and That Petrol Emotion does a surprisingly credible version of "Mother Sky" (it is, after all, an epic). Can covers are nothing new. There's a lot of them out there; those are just two of my favorites.

11

And Can's "Vitamin C" is a breakdancing staple; Busdriver sampled "Turtles Have Short Legs" on "Avant Core." Etc.

12

oops! Typo, I guess I should be hitting preview

Hidden Number did play Paperhouse that night, and then Osama called us long distance to tell us how happy he was with our arrangement. It was such high praise that we're going to keep that song on our set list for a while.
