This A&R guy is spot-on.
If vocal talent were the measuring stick, then all the hipsters on SLOG would love Celine Dion. ;-)
Pop culture is all about capturing the imagination of the masses, and Sanjaya has done that. It's somewhat of a turning-of-the-tables on those of you who think you're zooming the system by keeping him in. In reality, you're doing exactly what the masses have always done relative to pop icons.
Seder was beautiful last night. Lovely way to keep reminding Slog readers of our sacred holiday. We talked about Sanjaya at Seder last night too. Kabbalah is ALL in ONE.
Is Madonna the best vocalist in America?
Is Madonna the most beautiful woman in America?
You don't need to be a great singer to be a pop star. Nor do you have to be traditionally good looking. It's all about putting on a good show, having a good act, having a personality that hooks people for whatever reason.
Celine Dion has vocal talent? A perfect and pure voice?
Why do we spend so much time and energy on someone who has no soul and the personality of a drink from Orange Julius?
If that's what people wanna be entertained by fine. I'm no cultural dictator of what people should like and dislike but Idol really gets me down.
biggie...yes, Celine has vocal talent. You'd sound foolish to try to argue otherwise.
To the point that she has little soul? I'd likely agree with you. But, still, there's no point to dismissing her as meaningless.
Art is subjective, no matte how hard hipsters try to pretend otherwise. Musical taste can turn on so many factors; irony, history, memory, emotions, theory, sex, etc. If you don't have at least a couple of songs in your collection from nearly every genre, you've likely artificially limited yourself too narrowly.
...but, to let American Idol get you down? You need to relax. :-)
Celine Dion, you say? Check this one out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FONt47Z0KZg
