More on McCain’s Stroll in Baghdad

Today the New York Times knocks the legs out from under McCain’s claim that one can take a care-free stroll through the neighborhoods of Baghdad:

BAGHDAD, April 2 — A day after members of an American Congressional delegation led by Senator John McCain pointed to their brief visit to Baghdad’s central market as evidence that the new security plan for the city was working, the merchants there were incredulous about the Americans’ conclusions.

“What are they talking about?” Ali Jassim Faiyad, the owner of an electrical appliances shop in the market, said Monday.

Even Andrew Sullivan thinks McCain looks like a fool on this one.

“Like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime.”

McCain's going to drop out of the race in a month, watch. He can't fundraise, and he's getting hammered on all sides for his new "say anything no matter how ridiculous and transparently false" policy. The man's in his 70s. Isn't there a rocking chair and a mint julep waiting for him somewhere?

I'm only 30, but a rocking chair and mint julep sounds sublime. I'm going to ask Liberty to install a rocking chair cause their julep is sooooo nice. I think McCain is getting what he deserves for betraying all that "straight talk" nonesense he used to promote himself with. Eat it old man!

Yes, most reputable news sources will discredit the "walk in Baghdad" story. But just wait. The idea that you can now "walk the streets of Baghdad" will enter the right wing punditsphere, and in a few months all conservatives will be repeating that little sound bite as gospel truth.

@7 - lets hope so! If they believe it they may try it, and that's a sure fire way to thin their ranks. I can just picture fundy christian families packing up for a vacation to the shiney new safe and fun Messopotamia!

Let's take up a collection to send Hutch on a fag-bashing mission to Baghdad. Tell him there's homos there with their dicks out who need prayin' over. Get him a t-shirt with a picture of Ayatollah Khameini on it and send him to a Sunni marketplace, asking "are there any men who lie with men here?"

Dude, I'm so in. Put me down for a hundred bucks and let's figure out how to teach Hutch how to say "I'm here to convert you heathen Arab faggots to Christianity".
