Modest Beginnings

posted by on April 20 at 12:51 PM

We’ve just dug up, from the vault of Strangers published before the internet, one of the earliest things written about Modest Mouse—and also one of the earlier pieces written for The Stranger by then-music editor Kathleen Wilson. It’s her account of hanging out with them for an afternoon in 1996, when they were still in high school.

Here’s a random excerpt from a scene at a llama farm:

Isaac knows how to tell the difference between the “ladies” and the “men” among the llamas; according to his theory, it has something to do with the length of the necks. He cautions me to not get too close to the matted beasts, claiming a llama can hock a loogie backed with enough velocity to knock me flat on my ass. Because his llama-blend cardigan creates a certain solidarity with the beasts, Jeremy walks right up to a big ol’ “man,” offers him some grass, and escapes unbesmirched.

The whole thing’s here. Note the photo. All together now: “Awwww.”

That's a really cute article. The snippet that you chose to blockquote confused the hell out of me though. I thought "llama" was slang for something, heh. I'm dumb.

Looking back is fun, isn't it? Maybe you guys should post that bogus date rape story you went to press with years ago. Those were the days...

That lady (Ms Wilson) was a damn good writer, and I dont even like mopey white guy music. One of the best you guys have had. And you've had your share of good ones.

Yikes, I actually remember reading this article when it came out.

And, I also remember the bogus date rape story. (I know people who still won't listen to MM because of it. Love to hear Erica's take on it.)

Yeah, that date rape story really hurt Modest Mouse. Whatever happened to that band anyway?

And didn't the Stranger make it all up? Or was there a a police report and an accusation?

Posted by EXTC | April 20, 2007 1:33 PM

if i recall correctly, there was obviously an accusation, but there was never a police report.

Wait, I thought Jeremy was the youngest. He's only 2 grades below me, so none of them were in high school in '96.

Is this like when Bill Wyman was only 22 on the first Stones lp?

Brock dropped out of high school.

The woman filed a police report but never pressed charges.

The article appeared in this issue of The Stranger. Funny, but it seems to have mysteriously vanished, or at least I can't find it. You can still see a reference to it on the cover though.

@11: It's not up to the woman to press charges, it's the prosecutor's decision. Once she files a report with the police, what happens next is pretty much beyond her control.
