Who You Calling A Butch?

posted by on April 12 at 13:54 PM

From the New York Post:

One of them was “slightly pretty,” so the freelance film director decided to say hi.
Next thing he knew, he was encircled, beaten and knifed in the gut right there on a Greenwich Village sidewalk - by seven bloodthirsty young lesbians.

“The girls started coming out of nowhere,” Dwayne Buckle told a Manhattan jury yesterday, describing the bizarre beat-down he suffered last summer, allegedly at the hands of a seething sapphic septet from Newark, N.J.

“I felt like I was going to die.”

Buckle, 29, of Queens, took the stand in Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday to admit he was defenseless and terrified after his simple “hello” spurred a predawn melee on Sixth Avenue at West 4th Street.

Later in the report:

The women, in turn, claim they were defending themselves against a violent, anti-gay bigot, and counter that Buckle provoked them as he sat outside the IFC Center movie theater trying to talk pedestrians into buying his latest movie.

When they rebuffed his advances - telling him he wasn’t their type - he began calling them “f- - -ing dykes,” they say. He then spat on them, threw a cigarette at them, and even grabbed on e of them by the throat - which, like much of the melee, was caught on an IFC video security camera.

“I’ll f- - - you straight, sweetheart,” he told defendant Venice Brown, 19, before choking her, her lawyer, Michael Mays, told jurors.

Buckle told a different story on the stand, assigning many of his alleged attackers monikers.

There was Brown, the one he admittedly called an “elephant.” Then there was the one with the “low haircut,” do-rag and wife-beater T-shirt, whom he admittedly called “a man,” and the “slightly pretty” one to whom he first said hello.

It all started, he said, when the first two walked by. “They looked effeminate [sic] and one of them was slightly pretty, so I said ‘hi’ to them,” he said.

But the “heavier girl, she started to dog me out,” Buckle said.

“What does that, perchance, mean,” asked the judge, Justice Edward McLaughlin. “Just disrespect me,” Buckle explained. Then “more girls started coming out of nowhere.”

Buckle admitted he retaliated, telling the one with the “low haircut” that “she looks like a man.” He felt spit on the back of his neck, and spat back.

That’s when the women’s fists began flying. “I had my hands in the air in defense of their blows,” he said. Then “I felt like a nick in my abdomen. I didn’t know what happened.

“Everybody just jumped me,” he added…

Despite the provocation:

Three of the original seven women are currently serving six-month jail sentences for attempted assault. But four others are on trial on first-degree gang-assault charges that could get them anywhere from three to 25 years in prison.

The accused ringleader - Patreese Johnson, 20, whom Buckle called the “slightly pretty one” - is additionally charged with attempted murder for allegedly pulling a knife from her purse and slashing Buckle repeatedly, lacerating his liver and stomach.

Even from this report, which favors the filmmaker, it is clear that he deserved the beat-down. Instead displaying his emotional wounds in public, he should thank the gods he lived through the punishment and move on.

Oh, uh-uh. Much as I demand respect for women, committing a felony assault is not the right response absent a need for self defense. Period. If those young women did not need to defend themselves, they had no legal right to use force.

Let's not turn this into the lesbian version of a gay panic defense, now.

He might have deserved to get his as kicked, but he shouldn't have been stabbed repeatedly.

Never the less, we now have two new cool band names:

"Seven Bloodthirsty Young Lesbians"

and

"The Seething Sapphic Septet."

Yeah, what elswinger et al said. No matter what you think about fists flying and bigoted insults, the line is drawn at knives and guns.

Very VERY respectfully to gomez--- have you ever been discriminated against for being gay?
When someone tries to tear you down just for being gay, I think guns and knives are very appropriate. Its time people stop assuming we will just take it. Its time for GLBT's to fucking fight back. In Eddie Murphy's homophobic "Delirious"(one of my favs actually of his stand ups) he says "the guy wadn't just a faggot, he was a kick your ass faggot"

I think that's a Ghandhi quote.

Wait, i mean Osama Bin Laden.

Nobody deserves any of that shit. Not the verbal assault, even less the physical one.

So somebody calls you a name, and that makes it okay to slash away at his vital organs? I am all for a good ole fashioned ass whoopin', but there is quite a big difference between that and atempted murder....

Unless, Matthew, your argument is that, if YOU are getting a beat down because you're gay, or whatever, you need to use a gun or knife to defend yourself, then I would support you.

But if you were walking down the street and someone said "Hey fag," so you shot them in the face, sorry, you're on your own on that.

I remember hearing about the attack when it first happened. He's a fucking asshat for trying to put all the blame on those women, but, even asshats don't deserve to get knifed.

Nothing says I'm nearing 4 p.m. on a Thursday like reading about a horde of shanking lesbians on Slog.

Beautiful.

The gist I get from the articles is that he did actually attack them first. No defense of the knifing or anything, but it does say that him grabbing the one by the throat and choking her was caught on the security camera.

matthew #6: "have you ever been discriminated against for being gay?"

No, but I've been discriminated against, even assaulted, for being a white male (and in one instance for having long hair). Perhaps you, too, have been targetted as a white male, assuming you are white and grew up in the city, rode public transportation, and attended public schools.

Regardless, none of the perps should have been repeatedly stabbed in the stomach and liver, then told to shut up and "move on".

Those violent lesbians are the vanguard of young lesbian culture:

Very Respectfully to Sean, yes I did get my ass kicked regularly growing up one of the only white kids in rural Alaska. The Natives did not like us there and my Dad worked for Big oil, not much I could do, but being a gay white man, I've certainly learned to defend myself.
To all, yes I went overboard stating that guns/knives were appropriate and I take it back, it was a pseudo joke aimed at all out there who think us fags will just sit back and take it. A Hate crime is a Hate crime is a Hate crime. Does a Straight person have the right to slit my throat because they hate gays? Do I have the right to slash a straight persons throat because I hate them right back? OF COURSE NOT!
Do straight people have the right to take my rights and freedoms away? No, but they chisel away at them daily with much success all across the country and the world.
Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Truthfully I only condone what the woman did IF AND ONLY IF it was self defense. Did I smile a bit reading it? YOU BET YOUR ASS!

Even if the guy was the instigator (not clear from Charles' post), it's seems she started stabbing him after he'd been neutralized by a kick-circle of lesbians (and, yes, it's hard not chuckle at that image).

I don't think that legally qualifies as a self defense scenario (at least in WA).

Matthew, I've been called a faggot gook enough times to know I'm qualified enough to tell you that you can get over it without stabbing or shooting somebody.

If he started it and grabbed one of them by the throat, I'm all for him getting a nice well deserved beating. But if seven of them were kicking his ass, then the knife should have stayed in the purse. A few bruises and a black eye, maybe even a broken nose... no problem. Slicing his liver? Not cool.
