Slog - Comments on I Love Sam Harris Too! Oh, Wait...

Oh! OH! I thought you meant SAM HARRIS, 80's Star Search pseudo-phenom, whose vibrato could rattle windows underground on Mars and whose Judy Garland covers brought even her corpse to tears! Remember? Remember? I don't. Ladies and gentleman...the ORIGINAL American fucking Idol (and, uh, Liza)... What is he doing now, do you think? And what is his relationship with Jesus? I wonder......

He's still out and about in the LA area making appearances. Last I heard he did a few nights at House of Blues in WeHo. He's out and proud. Used to make appearances on a morning show on the now defunct QTV. About his relationship with the Big J? Dunno. He's a nice guy though and has had a husband for many years. I'm not a huge fan, but I like nice guys.

I DO remember Sam Harris, yeah, I'm a weird one. There's more alumni I remember too, cause Star Search was addictive mush in my nuclear family youth (perhaps the Three Mile Island meltdown did have an effect). I was there watching Sawyer Brown before they went on to country & western fame. And though I found out years later, but may have seen her compete back then, Rosie O'Donnell took home the comedy prize. There's a few others, but those are my top two.

Back in my younger days I spent a summer working on a fishing boat in Alaska. One of the guys on that boat had the Sam Harris cassette. Through poor planning, we ended up with almost no music on the boat. Here is the rotation:

The Honey Drippers
Jimmy Buffett (Son of a son of a sailor)
Sam Harris
The captain's Hoagie Carmichael collection.

His big hit was a cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." He did this thing at the end, "why can't IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII" where the "I" started out low and went really high. That was his signature move.

Sam's one Top 40 pop hit was "Sugar Don't Bite" which hit #36 on the Billboard charts in the fall of 1984.

To put this into some pop music perspective, this is right around the time that John Waite's "Missing You" was taking the top spot on the charts away from Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It".

I remember John Waite. I liked John Waite.

Sam Harris?
You're no John Waite.

He was one of the leads on CBS's "The Class" earlier this season. He played Perry, the stereotypically gay-acting husband of the TV local newswoman until both characters were vanished about 2/3 of the way through the season. He reappeared a couple more times.
