Holy Crap! An Earthquake!

posted by on April 5 at 15:33 PM

Fishing around on the state highway department’s web site for information on the viaduct , I came across this simulation of what might happen to the 520 bridge in a major earthquake. All I can say is I’m glad I don’t work on the Eastside (especially since they’re having a little trouble figuring out how to pay for a replacement).

Wow, nice fishing! Of course you could've just checked out the front page of today's P-I.

but it wasn't andrew sullivan...so it doesn't need an attribute. attribute links are only given to "cool" sites like sullivan or boingboing. attributes go up, not down. if you ain't cool you don't get a link. if the stranger wishes they were as relevant and cool as some other site, they link. if not, they make it seem like they actually go out and find this cool content on their own instead of filching it. it's their way of showing how hip and "in the know" they are. which is funny. because that only works if you only visit the stranger's blog and nowhere else. just because you're the only hip paper in town doesn't mean you're the only blog out there.

iwas -- maybe you have a future at the stranger as a staff psychologist. you'd assume that they're paralized, just waiting for you to come on board there and set 'em right. you lurk here, might as well get paid....nothing! Get it? Your joke!

Good god.

Imagine the human cost if the damn thing came down at rush "hour" (i.e. 6 am to 8pm, six days a week). Or the economic concequences of it being gone for years....

Did you see the partner video of what a "20 year storm" could do?

Forget the viaduct. This is the real catastrophe-to-happen.

who cares? an earthquake of that magnitude likely would "implode" many area buildings -- especially those built on fill -- causing a much more extreme loss of life on land than on the bridge. and i thought you stranger people are always going on and on about how much you hate the eastside anyway? why not stick a few of its residents in the dunk tank?

Good point. Do you have a kleenex I can borrow?

Making videos like that is bad luck. Now it may actually happen! Shame on the WSDOT!

ECB - Dude, it's obvious you got it from the P-I. But even if you didn't, don't play it off as some *find* you got "fishing around" wsdot; it's the lead item on the agency's website.

Oh Bullshit you hack.

What's next, you gonna start posting Joel Connelly's columns and calling them your own?

Serious, go back to Austin little girl..

Come back after you grow up a bit.

Time to scare everyone into building a new bridge.

What else is new?

I have a suggestion for all of you that frequently use the 520 and/or the viaduct.

You want a new bridge and/or viaduct?

You will have my ungodly blessing to have them built as long as you pay a toll for their use.

Opinions are like assholes and I just showed you mine.

What is the fucking problem with you patronizing ECB haters?

"Go back to Austin little girl..."

Apparently you are an idiot with a short dick who is threatened by a woman with strong ideas. I don't agree with ECB all the time, but her ideas don't threaten me.

What I love is that WSDOT and the Gov have different sets of math for different projects.

Viaduct math: $4.6 billion project needs $6 billion in the bank.

520 math: $4.6 billion project needs $500 million in the bank. Don't worry, the rest will magically appear through these sources that only leave us a million or so short.
