Politics The Gonzales Testimony

Posted by on April 19 at 13:40 PM

TPM’s Joshua Marshall, who helped push the fired US Attorneys scandal into the public consciousness, says he’s only hearing bad things about Gonzales’s testimony before Congress today:

From the buzz I’m hearing today, if Alberto Gonzales were a stock, we’d be at that point when those automatic trading halts kicked in because so many people are trying to sell.

Here, also courtesy of TPM, are a couple of the day’s testiest exchanges, both of them between Gonzales and New York Senator Charles Schumer:

ĦAy, caramba!

2

You guys do realize that Bush only brought Gonzales in to be a scapegoat, right?

3

Gonzales has the same voice as Charlie Sheen.

4

The incompetence is stunning, Just stunning! He can't even come up with a good lie.

5

For god sake, Al, at least lie quickly!

I hate that little mother fucker!

6

Gomez,

You're obviously not following this scandal very closely. How exactly would Bush bring Gonzales to be a "scapegoat" for something that hadn't happened yet, and wouldn't have happened at all without his collusion? If Bush brought Gonzales in for reasons relating to US Attorney dismissal, then it was to effect those inappropriate personnel changes, not just to take heat for them. Bush installed Gonzales because he could be trusted to do Bush's bidding, even where that entailed clearly unethical or illegal action on his part.

7

gomez and shallow analysis are both right. because Bush will never, ever take responsibility for his actions, every single member of his administration is a potential scapegoat. and don't think they don't know it these days.

8

Sell, sell, sell!

Yowch. I can't decide if listening is entertaining or not--if it were fictional, it'd be hilarious. As it is, the amount of power he wield(s?ed?) makes me nervous.

9

Christin-

"As it is, the amount of power he wield(s?ed?) makes me nervous?"

Have you heard of Paul Wolfowitz?

Can somebody post about economics? hedge-funds?

10

Beyond the Texan twang, he sure sounds a lot like POTUS.

11

I know #6 was a troll but I should respond:

Remember who Gonzales takes orders from. He's just following orders.

12

Ummm, Gomez...?

You do realize that conducting the business of the DOJ is ultimately the responsibility of the AG, yes? "Just following orders" is not an excuse for his unethical or illegal conduct. If you're suggesting that holding Gonzales accountable for his actions is somehow playing into the hands of Bush, then you are frankly stupid. To put it mildly, this scandal has not been a good thing for the Bush administration.

13

Is there even one single member of the White House senior staff that has even an ounce of integrity?

* crickets chirping *

Okay. Never mind.
