Chow Even Jonah Will Agree That This Goes Too Far

For your Monday atherosclerotic pleasure, I give you: Deep-fried butter balls!

That’s right. Deep-fried balls OF BUTTER. The recipe (from an episode of Paula Deen’s Food Network show called “Everything’s Better With Butter,” relies heavily on butter (two sticks) but uses cream cheese (two ounces) as a binder. You cream them together, freeze until solid, batter and fry. Full recipe below the jump, but trust me, you really don’t want to go there.

2 sticks butter
2 ounces cream cheese
Salt and pepper
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 egg, beaten
1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
Peanut oil, for frying

Cream the butter, cream cheese, salt and pepper together with an electric mixer until smooth. Using a very small ice cream scoop, or melon baller, form 1-inch balls of butter mixture and arrange them on a parchment or waxed paper lined sheet pan. Freeze until solid. Coat the frozen balls in flour, egg, and then bread crumbs and freeze again until solid.

When ready to fry, preheat oil in a deep-fryer to 350 degrees F.

Fry balls for 10 to 15 seconds until just light golden. Drain on paper towels before serving.

Wow. The bacon-wrapped, cheese-filled hot dogs actually looked pretty tasty, but when I saw this I vomited in my mouth a little.

2

This is just plain Food Porn. How can weed be illegal, but propagating solid fat, case-hardened in boiling fat, is a great down-home serving idea? Just plain fucked in the head.

3

I didn't realize that so many of you are un-American lilly-livered commies. This foodstuff is practically the definition of patriotism!

4

If you make this and eat it you deserve a heart attack and then no medical attention.

5

Just reading this has given me diarrhea.

6

Things is... Unlike most foods, I don't think the deep-frying really makes this food product any worse than it already is. Its basically just frying balls of almost-pure frozen fat in pure hot fat.

Guess what Erica's eating for lunch on Friday?
Except I'm gonna wrap them in bacon.

9

Hovsep: The same is true of hot dogs, bacon, hamburger, etc. Deep frying actually makes these foods better for you (per bite) because of the breading. At least cream cheese has some nutrients.

10

I guess the only question is exactly how much Phizer stock does Paula Deen own.

11

My liver is threatening to sue me just for looking at the pic

This is just a little worse than the Sizzler's deep-fried Creamed Corn.

I dunno, I'd try them at least twice. Cream cheese AND butter? sounds amazing. Not as elegant or interesting as, say, a fantastic chocolate or a truffle or something, but if this is the best America has to offer, I'll check it out.
