A “gift” from Ahmadinejad. (Do the men get to keep these nice suits?)

OH MY GOD!!!! You mean talking to our enemies instead of bombing the hell out of them gets results!!!????

We all know that Bush would never talk to our enemies. As a matter of fact, if it was American's captured by the Iranians, we would have attacked them. I hate my country anymore.....

Iran just made the US look like the evil empire they've always claimed us to be. Calculated, for sure. But the rest of the world sees US = torture and Iran = reasonable.

Well done GW.

That chick got fucked over with that lame striped shirt and the head wrap that makes her look like a Russian grandma. If all the guys get dressed up looking dapper in their suits couldn't they spare some style for the lady? Oh, the subtle torture of Iranians.

Monkey has it. This was a publicity stunt designed beautifully to shame the US and give the high moral ground to the scumbag Iranis over GW Bush and crew. This is what we get for Abu Ghraib and waterboarding. More and more I am coming to believe that Bush himself is an Al Qaeda plant who is following their strategy to a T.

I knew everything would be cool.
See there is no reason that Britian needs to jump the gun. They use great tack and assess the situation and angles before they make assuptions. The Iranians didn't kidnap them. They did not harm them. They just pissed them off a little but no harm done right.
On the other hand if this was American Sailors most likely our reaction would be "thats an act of war" "those damned terroists" and "those sailors are hostages lets go git those mofos"
Its amazing that we seemed to have flip flopped roles and we are the Brits of old. Divide and conquer.
Its sad how we lost that hero vibe after the fall of Germany and are now seen as overreactionaries and every thing we do is a fucking mistake. In a sense we have the right intentions , but the way we go about it is just to trigger happy. Not cool.
You don't see Britian sending in James Bond 007 too stear up trouble in iran now do you. I think that they can handle this with honor and respect for the other guy to get those sailors home in no time.
Hopefully in our future we can do the same without Declaring War over something like this.
Thanks Britian for not losing your head.
And that sailor was right he did confess correctly. By Their maps he was in Their waters.
It was a map misunderstanding. Thats all. No need to nuke anybody over a miscommunication.

What nonesense!

Ahmadinejad is trying to save face and pretend it was a decision based on humanitarian considerations and some people read it as generosity and justice! Why were these marines in Iranian captivity anyway? They have done nothing wrong, kept to the rules, kept on their side of the territorial waters, were actually implementing a UN resolution. They were kidnapped, terrorized, paraded, humiliated, manipulated and now some people applaud the generosity of this ridiculously obscene "pardon".

It proves that the pressure and realization of what this could mean for Iran was getting even through the thick skulls of the Ayatollas. Maybe there is a sliver of hope here that these people are amenable to some form of reason after all, if threatened by sanctions that may hurt their people beyond what is acceptable even to these fanatics. Have we not heard a lot recently that 60% of Iran's refined oil is imported? I can only assume these 60% figured often in the "diplomacy" that was going on.

Funny, also, how some people rejoice at the thought that a totalitarian, irrational regime may have succeeded in showcasing Bush in a bad light and not a word about the relief sane people would feel at the thought that these young men and woman will be free from their nightmare.

Carollani: no kidding. They couldn't find someone who knew how to dress a woman in something other than hijab? At least give her a suit like the men if they can't come up with anything else.

Fnarf: Agreed about Bush doing everything he can to bolster Al-Qaeda. I was going to say that although Iran might have been trying to shame the US, they also came off as a bit ridiculous - but then I remembered it pales in comparison to the ridiculousness of our invasion of Iraq anyway.

Curious:
Bush called the Bristish sailors "hostages". Meanwhile, the US still hasn't released (or charged, or reported on the condition of) the Iranians imprisoned in January after a US raid in the autonomous Kurdistan region (Kurdish officials vehemently opposed the arrest of the Iranians, who they said had been invited). The hypocrisy is maddening. More at http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/04/world/middleeast/04cnd-Iraq.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin.

get your facts straight, elswinger. burkas aren't worn in Iran.

#6 so your saying that its ok that only we have a coast gurad. No other country can guard their waters. If it were a cuban water boat patrol we would would have freaked and probably have done the same. We support South korea when they do it, and we know why, but that doeasn't make it something we have to go to war over.
these situations do happen.
Its not always an act of terroism or war.
Its just like the Border Patrol. Do we call the Border Patrol terroists when they round up mexican citizens? Obviously not.
So why should it be any different for Iranians to protect their waters. If indeed they do won it. thats another debate. Do we own water? You bet we do.

"At least they didn't make her wear a full on burka."

In Iran (some) women wear the chador, not burkas (that's reserved for Afghanistan, which is really nothing like Iran). And even that can hardly be seen in the cities where women must cover their hair with the veil (hijab), but they often do so in a very loose way, because they don't like it!

Why don't you people try to get some hard knowledge about this region in which your troops are fighting?

Yes, the style differences between the men and the woman are jarring. #15 steve made a good point.

monkey, Fnarf: how can you say Iran is reasonable or has the high moral ground? Kidnapping sailors is reasonable or gives them high moral ground?! I totally agree that the calm, level-headed response of Britain puts Bush/America's "beat the drum of war when disrespected" response to shame. But I give absolutely zero kudos to Iran. Ahmedenijad is just trying to score some cheap publicity points so he can go on refining nuclear material while stalling the UN. Anyone should be able to see through his ploy.

Him: They did not torture, waterboard, or beat to death any of their prisoners. We did. I assume you are aware we are trying to win a propaganda war in that part of the world?

british hostage release: sponsored by perry ellis!

Posted by alithea | April 4, 2007 12:34 PM

Fnarf, we also didn't go into Iran and take a bunch of their soldiers. Iran doesn't get a pat on the back simply because it didn't torture the prisoners it kidnapped. (And do you honestly believe Iran doesn't torture any of its prisoners?? You know, the ones not in the world's spotlight?) Britain gets a pat on the back for being calm and reasonable, but that's about it. Ahmedenijad is an ass, and even Iranians know it. This incident doesn't bolster him or hurt the US at all, imo (vs. Abu Ghraib, etc., which yes, hurts the US).

I do agree, though, with your thought that Bush is an Al Qaeda plant. He's created more jobs and training for terrorists than he has for regular Americans at home.

As to the matter of whether the British sailors did or didn't violate Iranian territorial waters, it's going to boil down to a "he said, she said" scenario.

While GPS readings might have indicated they were in international waters at the time of the boarding, it must be noted that Global Positioning entails a well-documented margin-of-error due to a number of factors, although generally the margin isn't anywhere near the 4 mile discrepency the Iranians have indicated put the Brits in their waters.

And although I doubt anyone really wants to give the Iranians credit for occupying any subjective "moral high-ground" in this incident, clearly they've scored some propoganda points at the expense of shrub and his minions, regardless of their ulterior motives, and furthermore, have managed to yank a potential plank out from under any future rationalizations for military action against them.

Posted by COMTE | April 4, 2007 1:05 PM
24

COMPTE, I'll go off on a technical tangent.

GPS margin of error is no more than a couple hundred feet. And that is civilian GPS. That civilian GPS margin of error is actually intentional and purposefully built in. Military GPS is much more accurate, and the civilian GPS is slightly dumbed down at the insistence of the military. So the GPS that the British sailors had aboard would have been much more accurate than the GPS we can buy for our cars.

Posted by SDA in SEA | April 4, 2007 1:16 PM

Plus, the Iranians confirmed the British GPS coordinates initially, then changed them to coordinates that were within Iranian waters.

#15 - actually Iranian government officials and politicians never wear ties, it's not just Ahmadinejad. It's a political thing, kind of interesting actually.

Iran is pretty good at the whole brinkmanship real politic thing. Now if only they could develop a domestic policy that doesn't pander to the clerics and anti-semites or otherwise suck. I have great hopes for a Persian revival. I'm not holding my breath though, especially not now.
