What's up with that background music? Makes it sound like a horror movie.

Oh my god, the editing is terrible!

When you see the rough footage through the cheesy filter of the Hollywood money machine of the day, and then think about the final product, it's amazing that the film was ever made. Despite Lucas' generous 'borrowing' from others to concoct SW, the man was truly a freakin' visionary in the day. Computers controlling cameras? WTF?!

Okay, the trailer convinces me--STAR WARS was a hit if only due to John Williams' score and better special effects...

@3:

It's pretty standard practice in the film industry for the musical score to be one of the last pieces added to the completed cut; since the music has to be correctly timed to the edited film, it's important that the composer be able to work from a reasonably finished print. As a result, it's fairly common for the background music in the trailer (which can come out months before the final film) to use either "stock" music, or a soundtrack lifted from another film.

And Tim K., you can thank John Dykstra, not Lucas, for the invention of the computer motion-control filming system.

In 1976, my family, including my three visiting step-brothers, all went out for a special night at the movies, to go see King Kong. WHOA boy, was I excited! Too bad: when we got to the theater, it was sold out, and so we opted to see the other movie playing, 'The Big Bus'. It's a disaster movie spoof - taking place on a big bus. At 6, I didn't know it was supposed to be funny, and wouldn't have understood the pop-culture jokes anyway. In fact, until I wrote this stupid blog entry, and looked the movie up, I didn't know it was a comedy. Still, there I am, only 6 yrs old and thinking 'this sucks ass'. It was my first understanding that anything at a movie theater could be so awful. My first heartbreak.

Fast-forward a few months, to the next visit with my three step-brothers. Once again, the family is going out for movie night, and must first decide which film to see. The choices were Star Wars or Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo. I recall being very upset when the family chose to see Star Wars. I didn't know what it was about and I was still reeling from 'The Big Bus' fiasco ( I didn't get to see movies very often - one had to pick VERY carefully)

I figured Star Wars must be a movie packed with various celebrities ('Stars') competing ('Wars') with one another for something ever-so-precious. Surely, at some point in the story, they would pelt each other with pies. (yes, I very much remember visualizing the inevitable pie fight - and, thinking, that would be so sucky. ) I lobbied very hard for the Herbie movie. I made it very clear that I preferred the high-brow automobile-come-to-life racing cops-n-robbers Herbie comedy over the low-brow celebrity pie-fighting Star Wars schlock. Afterall, the Herbie movie was part of a series.. like a saga.. we've aleady seen the first Herbie film, we HAD to go see this one.. right?

I just about peed my pants with delight in the first few minutes of Star Wars - that music, those lasers, those robots, wow. If I had known what the word meant, this is what I would've said: "Fuck Herbie, forever."

And that's my very favorite argument to have ever lost.
