Trouble in Dildotown

Back in February I wrote about the “ongoing scenario” at Club Lagoon. I spoke with Castle Megastore employee Billy Helton about his experiences working underneath Club Lagoon, which he described as “hell above us.” His employers at Castle were none too happy about that.

Today, Billy e-mailed The Stranger to let us know he’d been fired from Castle, alleging:

i was quoted in the article about CLub Lagoon a few weeks ago . i’m the one that got castle megastores inc all up in a gruff . well , low and behold they fired me for speaking my mind on behalf of the comunity about how much i couldn’t stand working below a club that does nothing but shit out homophobic assholes … for lack of a better word . either way i am now without a job and without rent for my apartment [but] i cant say that i am not happy about not working there anymore

….i heard that they were afraid to fire me
because they thought i would contact the stranger and
let you know what happened and print another story
having to do with castle or something so i thought it
only right to do what they expected and see where it
goes from here .

I asked Castle Human Resources Director Adriana Rosales if, indeed, Helton had been fired for his quote in my article. “No,” she said “There are other reasons [why] and he knows it.”

Club Lagoon owner Ryan Howard took exception to Helton’s description but acknowledged that there had been tension between his business and the neighborhood. Howard said that he intended to make changes to bring in a more mature crowd.

I'd just as soon Castle go away. I would rather Babeland move there. The make dildos and such seem elegant and earth-mothery. The Castle just seems crass.

More of this is coming to the hill. Sugar has transformed itself into a straight bar, and look what happened there after only a couple weeks of their new Friday night - fighting, guns and police. People beware.

Club Lagoon will be hosting Tolerance Night on Tuesdays from 8:30pm-9:15pm, $10 cover and $7 well drinks.

Posted by monkey | March 23, 2007 2:42 PM

I find a 10 dollar cover night on a Tuesday to be highly intolerant.

I often get "it's" wrong. I know that its proper us as a contraction of "it is" but if something belongs to "it" it seems like "it's" would be just as valid because we use the apostrophe s in other uses, such as the possessive "Jack's tool" and the contraction "Jack's a tool."

Posted by elswinger | March 23, 2007 2:46 PM

is that Tolerance thing for real?

it can't be...I'd only pay $10 to get OUT of there...and $7 well drink seems odd...

the Castle stores are Osco's with dildos...and they're freaking your sex stuff from babes or even the crypt...

Posted by michael strangeways | March 23, 2007 2:52 PM

It's $7 to get in, $10 to get out.

Posted by elswinger | March 23, 2007 3:01 PM

Thanks for the link. I haven't seen this club, but I can see why people are alarmed. Seems pretty irresponsible to bus a bunch of straight boys to the Hill and get them drunk.

And yeah, that's a lot of money for a Tuesday night. You think at those rates they could afford to hire some security to keep their patrons from bashing the locals on the street, hmm?

Posted by Tlazolteotl | March 23, 2007 3:15 PM

Oh, wait. 8:30-9:15... you're being facetious, right?

Posted by Tlazolteotl | March 23, 2007 3:17 PM

Both those places suck. May they both die soon.

Lagoon is a big space, recovered from years of vacancy. I think they will get it right.

Castle is shitty - like an old style mafia owned porn center.

Funny they would get snotty about lgoon, guess it was nice having the space vacant, no compete for parking, etc.

Have been to Lagoon several time, all cool. I am a gay man who likes mixed bars. Called getting trade.

Billy should have kept his mouth shut and let his employers make a statement for the business.

Quite frankly, The Stranger should pony up and pay this kids rent and give him some spending money until he's back on his feet.

That's because you're confusing "it" with a noun. It's not. It is a pronoun. So:
Him - His
It - Its
You don't write "it's" for the possessive pronoun just like you don't write Hi's (or Him's or He's)

Wait, Club Lagoon is straight? I assumed, with the Lambo on the roof and the implicit Miami-Vice-80s theme (that is the theme, right?) it was a gay club with an ironic so-retro-it's-fashionable thing going on. I mean, what was there to Miami Vice if not a homo subtext (two fashion-forward guys in Miami)? And a Lambo is nothing if not a giant penis. Do women actually go there? Or is it kind of an elaborate downlow thing (again, like Miami Vice), where "straight" guys keep showing up week after week to "hang with the guys" despite the absence of women. (I will concede that doesn't necessarily mean anything, however, given that just about anywhere you go in Seattle the available men outnumber available women three or four to one).

Quite frankly, The Stranger should pony up and pay this kids rent and give him some spending money until he's back on his feet.

Really? With nothing to go by except the guy's claim that this is the reason he was fired? For all we know he was a disruptive slacker who didn't do his job, mouthed off to his boss, abused his customers, and killed kittens.

Posted by Joe | March 23, 2007 8:08 PM

I'll take him up on that offer. I'm mature.
I'd like to go to club lagoon. I think any clubs just as good as any. Hicup. Hicup.
Hey wheres all the pussy.
Your on capitol hill you nut relax.
oh sorry bout that. Its cool man. i'm cool. Just let me adjust to my surroundings.

Posted by DreadLion | March 23, 2007 9:31 PM

Hey Joe,

You explained it to me better than anyone has before.

Posted by elswinger | March 23, 2007 9:49 PM

Actually Joe,
the Stranger hiring process involves drowning a sack full of kittens. Let's not get too down on kitten-cide OK?

Posted by Jonah | March 23, 2007 10:54 PM

Well in that case, assuming the other things I speculated about him are true, he's perfectly qualified to work at The Stranger. Even if that would be a bit of a step down from the Castle, at least he can pay his rent. Problem solved.

Posted by Joe | March 24, 2007 12:32 AM

Yeah, Tolerance night?? Fuck Tolerance night at those rates. EVERYNIGHT SHOULD BE TOLERANCE NIGHT!!!! But honestly the club should just be shut down. The drunk straight guys have Belltown and Pioneer Square they can screw up all they want. (and trust me they have) The Hill is for everyone else.

The only acceptable solution for Club Lagoon is to close it's doors. Better for a vacant store front than a front for homophobia.

Does anyone even remember what a jerk this kid was when he worked at Buffalo Exchange in the U-District?!? I STOPPED shopping at Castle when I saw he got a job there. He shouldn't be trusted with fast food let alone selling sex toys to the public. Congrats to Castle for cutting that cancer out of their otherwise hip knowlegable staff.

Posted by Apt_302 | March 25, 2007 9:51 PM

hey "apt_302" why dont you leave a real name or confront this person yourself if you've been following his work history ... you sound like a lover scorned ... or just a pussy .

Posted by apt_307 | March 25, 2007 10:25 PM

Hey I think we're neighbors! You must work fast food...I apologize.

Posted by Apt_302 | March 26, 2007 8:00 AM

you still sound like a pussy .

I am a former employee of the castle and can honestly say that the Castle is a corporatation that does NOT care about its employees and seems them as desposible. I worked there for quite an eternity compared to new employees that only stayed for a couple weeks and more often than not, less than that. And still, regardless of the time i worked there, and sacrifices i made for my former company, they desposed of me for refusing to be treated like shit any longer.

Posted by T | March 27, 2007 6:09 PM

The lesson learned is to make sure you have friends working for a local paper willing to push a bullshit story on the public while ignoring any real injustices happening to any given employee at any given establishment on a daily basis. Mr. Helton was lucky enough to have this luxury whereas most people do not. The Stranger should "pony up" his rent money because ultimately Mr.Helton has made finding a new job even harder by making his clashes with previous employers a matter of public record.

Posted by Mike L | March 28, 2007 11:33 AM

Please feel free to pass along any information on major workplace injustices.
However, I think just about everyone has worked in a shitty retail job where they've been taken advantage of by their employer. Unfortunately that's just not news.

Posted by Jonah S | March 28, 2007 7:44 PM

Nevertheless, here we are Jonah. I would agree, this is not and never was news.
