re: the uw professor: i'll play the devil's advocate here and say that gov'ts have not put enough effort into waste disposal in general. they make it too expensive and difficult in other ways to dispose of things you're not supposed to just throw in the trash or pour down the drain. the end result is predictable enough, isn't it? for instance: in california you are not supposed to throw poopy diapers into the trash, as landfills are not equipped to deal with human waste, you're instead supposed to scrape the poo into the toilet first. who the hell does that? and mercury-containing batteries in those push and play kids books, etc., you're supposed to drive these things over to special facilites and/or pay for their disposal. oh, yeah, most people are going to do that!...it's called denial. and it's going to hurt us. if we were serious about the proper containment and disposal of hazardous materials, we'd be more realistic about human behavior and set up our processes accordingly, IMO.

Comment by Bastet

THIS WAR NEEDS TO END NOW!!!
It will take more than commenting on the blogo-sphere for real change to take place. People on the whole are really not apathetic, they feel powerless and hopeless. In our own state people are afraid to sign petitions with their real name and are signing them with an “X” instead. People fear this government. If we the people do not repudiate all that this criminal administration has done, then its actions will be legitimized, condoned, and made permanent.
People are either FOR the rule of law or they aren’t. If your neighbor commits a crime and you see it and you do not act, then you become complicit in that crime. In your silence you become complicit in the crimes of the Bush Regime.
Your government is creating a police state – obliterating basic constitutional protections, habeas corpus, the right to privacy, the right to dissent. Your government has been openly torturing people, and legitimized it with the Military Commissions act. Your president can declare martial law at any time with the passing of the John Warner Defense act. Your government plans on waging another illegal and illegitmate war with Iran.
People must organize together to fight this! It will take more than protests, it will take an upheaval from the bottom up- boycotts, legislation, impeachment resolutions, phone calls, letters AND protests- loud and large ones – it will take a massive effort at the grassroots level.
You must involve yourself to fix this situation. If you are too fearful yourself – open your checkbook to organizations who are fighting for democracy right now. They need money to organize, to leaflet, to poster, to travel.
All it will take to have the direction of this Regime to personally affect YOU will be one more terrorist act on American soil. If that were to happen then you will see this country more resemble 1940’s Germany than the “land of the free”. This country could become, in the space of just a few hours, your worst nightmare.

bastet, have you really seen people signing petitions w/an "x" instead of their names?! in what context was this? are you a signature gatherer, perchance? what percentage do this, and where? the entry is invalid without a signature, so what sig. gatherer would even let this fly?
