Say No to a New Viaduct! Say No to a Tunnel!

posted by on March 11 at 14:33 PM

Say yes to gondolas.

The harmful effects of global warming on daily life already are evident, and hundreds of millions of people won’t have enough water within a couple of decades, top scientists will say next month at a meeting in Belgium.

At the same time, tens of millions of others will be flooded out of their homes each year as Earth reels from higher temperatures and sea levels, according to portions of a draft of an international scientific report obtained by The Associated Press.

Tropical diseases such as malaria will spread. By 2050, polar bears mostly will be found in zoos, their habitats gone. Fire ants and other pests will thrive.

Whenever climatologists come together, it becomes an echo chamber of rabid fatalistic frenzy as they put aside the principles of scientific research and adopt the politics du jour.

Ah, good to have great scientific minds gracing the humble Comments. So Chip, if the doctor were to tell you, "You're going to die of lung cancer if you don't stop smoking cigarettes," would you accuse the doctor of having an ax to grind?

Ants rule. If it were up to dieing race of Aliens to choose a host body to live in that was intelligent and could survive any environment, they would chose ants over humans. Phase 4 predicted that. Scientists can predict all they want, hell they predict asteroids, but they aint got no money honey to do anything about it.

But explain to me what effect the viaduct rebuild or tunnel will have on global warming?

The title of this post is suitably ironic. Think of all the energy that's been exerted here debating the Viaduct over the last (several now?) months. But guess what? A picturesque waterfront doesn't quite seem to matter when juxtaposed with such predictions. Climate change is coming and these minor issues we all like to get upset about do far too little to address the root problems. Let's put some energy into fighting for some real and deep change instead of the best way to put lipstick on the corpse.

That's another solution - let the viaduct be converted into a floating bridge.

The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning and I live by the river

(and thus close to gondolas, where the non-runningness of engines is nothing to fear)

Gay and gallant gondolieri,
Take us both and hold us tightly,
You have luck extraordinary;
We might both have been unsightly!
If we judge your conduct rightly,
'Twas a choice involuntary;
Still we thank you most politely,
Gay and gallant gondolieri!

Gondolas are gay. Long live gondolieri!

#8, best comment!
Yep, we'd be better off investing in portable de-salination tools (our rain is way salty folks), kayaks for the masses, and converting all empty lots into victory gardens or something. But we won't.

I watched The Day After Tomorrow last night after reading this post. Plus it's a fun movie to watch when the weather is really wild out.

It just makes me wonder what I'll see in my lifetime.
