wonder if opportunism will have him changing his position on same-sex marriage? his previous opinion was "not there yet".

What are you talking about? That's totally hedging!

Saying that he doesn't "share that position" doesn't spell out that he thinks gays are the super moral people he surely thinks they are.

Did you even read Hillary's response to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"?

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2007/03/senator_clinton.html
"General Pace has clarified his remarks, but let's not lose sight of the fact that 'Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell' is not working," she said. "We are being deprived of thousands of patriotic men and women who want to serve their country who are bringing skills into the armed services that we desparately need, like translation skills. And one can argue whether it was a good idea when it was first implemented, but we know have evidence as to the fact that we are in a time of war -- when we really need as many people as we can to recruit and retain in an all-volunteer army -- we are turning people away or discharging them not because of what they've done but because of who they are."

I'm still witing to find out which of his Americas I am in. The one he wants to take from or the one he wants to give to.

Having a worse record on gay rights than Clinton is trumped by saying some things.

As far as I can tell, Edwards is showing leadership in gay rights at the exact time that Hillary and Obama are disappointing us. His comments have been candid and brave in a way that neither of the other two candidates have matched. Maybe that's easier when you're not the frontrunner, but it still gets me going. I'm tired of crumbs, and I have yet to be convinced that Hillary and Obama are doing more than triangulating how to get our votes while maintaining plausible deniability about being pro-gay.

The important thing is getting your sound bites right, after all.

Fnarf is right on. This is "battle by sound bite" and sensationalist media at its finest, present company (SLOG) included. It's important to read complete stories (plural), not just headlines.
