I DO have a problem with God, a big one. It's religion I like; godless religion would be ideal. It would be nice to get together with the neighbors once a week and have a nice sit down and a chat, maybe some comforting, meaningless rituals, in a beautiful building. Charming. Unfortunately the only people who show up are the God-botherers, who ruin the whole fun.

Cluefulness is the state of having a clue. David Cross has a clue, Keanu Reeves does not, and if you gave him one he'd throw it away or eat it or something.

Fnarf: We have exactly what you speak of. Its called happy hour or bar time. Some people go once a week, others all the time. Some people only go during the high bar holidays of New Years, St. Patricks Day, and Halloween. The buildings aren't always beautiful, but there are great meaningless rituals and bonding between friends and strangers. ;)

It's not the same, Monique. There's never been a bar as beautiful as La Ste. Chappelle in Paris. Though the Philharmonic in Liverpool comes pretty close.

And there's no bar in Seattle that comes within a hundred miles of the kind of thing I mean. Bars in Seattle are solely for young people to get as fucked up as possible as rapidly as possible in, and then wander around punching each other and having their dog come over and lick you or shit on your shoe, with crappy antique rock music playing too loudly and horrible smells coming from every corner.

Mind you, as far as churches go I'm talking out of my ass. I haven't actually been in a church, except for tourism, weddings and funerals, in twenty years, and haven't attended a proper service in more than thirty.

Fnarf, you would definitely benefit from reading Bethany Clement's column. There are many bars/pubs that are pleasant and fun and contain none of the crowd of which you speak. (Not naming names for fear of who might think of invading my favorite haunts.)

Stick to nice, low-profile neighborhood places on a weeknight and you'll be fine. Most of the crowd you speak of only goes out on Friday and Saturday nights.

That's the nice thing about a city; it's big enough for all of us.
