Out of a Freak-Ridden Wasteland Comes a Star of Tomorrow

Yes yes, Seattle got a ton of shit for offering up a parade of freaks at the local American Idol auditions, but no less than three Seattle auditioners have made it into Idol’s top twelve, and one of them is a total star-in-the-making: Blake Lewis, hailing from Bothell, WA and pictured above.

I missed last night’s show, which I’ve been told featured a less-than-stellar Blake Lewis performance, but on every previous show I’ve seen, Lewis has easily distinguished himself as a front-runner, and a new breed of Idol contestant: he sings, dances, beat-boxes, and is accomplished at all of it. As Simon said early on (I’m paraphrasing), “Blake Lewis is the only contestant who’s bringing something new and completely contemporary.” I look forward to him mopping the floor with everybody.

(Plus, who doesn’t love a cute honky in a Common Market T-shirt?) Go Blake Lewis!

he IS adorable....the only reasons to watch Idol this year are him, Lakisha, and Eliza Doolittle....oh, and the train-wreck known as Sanjaya...

Sanjaya better be fucking kicked off this week or I'm popping a forehead vein.

Yeah, I heard Sanjaya committed a musical hate crime last night...

Wow. I went to High School w/ that guy. I had heard he made it onto American Idol, but would have had no idea he was actually doing well if it weren't for Slog. Thanks, David.

Blake did not do so hot last night, I think they all picked wrong Diana Ross songs. Most everyone sucked. LaKisha was the best.

Even better watching Paula slur a lot! It could be a drinking game.

Dude, that picture of Blake just screams "I'm a tool and a poseur, all wrapped up in one!". I mean, what's up with that hat, or those pants?

Believe it or not, he makes it work.

To his credit, Blake's attempt at updating the Diana Ross song came off MUCH better than the other guys. He's a natural-born performer, and he worked that ditty like nobody's business. Although it wasn't his personal best, he'll easily be back next week.

He looks kind of scary without gel, though.

I like Blake, but I thought he was pretty awful last night. He has charisma and star potential, but I'm not sure how far beat boxing can carry him.

Sanjaya may win this whole thing, though. But thanks to outsourced jobs. Think about it. The kid's an adorable Indian. Tons of businesses now have call centers in India. A few million Indians with free time sitting next to a phone. Certainly his singing skills haven't carried him this far.

I don't think Blake will be going anywhere for awhile. He is a good performer for sure. He just did not pull off that song vocally last night. He will be fine.

Kiss my ass Willis. If you ever met Blake in person you would find that he is the most genuine, out-going, and well-rounded soul you will ever come across. If only more men could be like him. I think you're simply jealous. Besides, he's the only one who can dance on this damn show.

I wasn't attacking Blake, just attacking his (or the producer's) choice in clothing. I've heard great things about the guy - but for my money, I'd rather listen to audiopoet.

Just sayin.

It's too bad that his tune didn't come off too well last night, but I'll say I'm proud of him.

When I heard he was trying out for AI I questioned how good an idea it was, but no matter how much farther he makes it, it's nice to see someone on that stage who has his own thing going on.

One of the judges made a comment a week or two ago about him being "contemporary" compared to the often "karaoke" feeling songs performed and I totally agree. I'd be a lot more interested in watching the show if the performers were all trying to push the envelope. Keep it up Blake!!!

And he said before he sang that Common Market was one of the groups that inspired him, way cool.

last night was the only performance of his i've seen. i was at my parents and that horrid show was on. i thought he was trying to be justin timberlake, but without the talent.

i guess he's normally better though.

He's cute. I'd do him. Which is why I looked up some of his other stuff, and though it's not great, some youtube videos of his music pre-america's next top model or whatever are pretty decent.

His performance on the show this week was better than the judges gave him credit for. They're just tearing him down because they prefer other contestants who are more bland. He does need to work on his vocals.

His ass is just perfect. You could eat breakfast off that ass.
