No news about the crazy power outtage that happened last night on Capitol Hill?? I got power back around 9:45-10. Not too bad all in all. Lots of drinking and laughing with neighbors, which is rare and yet so fun.

In 1993 Bill Clinton fired all the US attorneys. There were some grumblings from Bob Dole at the time, but there was no clamor for investigations and hearings. It's the President's prerogative to do so. So this is yet another pathetic non-scandal "scandal" from democrats grasping at every straw to discredit the administration. It's also worth noting that the firings are mostly on Bush's own appointees.

Thanks Proud Gay Republican @ #3, but that's usually the way purges by power mad freaks work. They get paranoid, and they kill their own. Can you say Stalin?

The scandal isn't that they were fired, it's WHY they were fired, which, the famous memo makes clear, is because they were too focused on pursuing the law and insufficiently dedicated to partisan political activity. US Attorneys are supposed to be attacking Democrats, not criminals, in Bush's America.

And yet again we see that the sole purpose of the Patriot Act is not to fight terrorism but to use the fear of terrorism to fight Democrats. This administration is wholly obscene.

Thanks, Fnarf and Josh, for clarifying what people like PGR @ 3 fail to get again and again. No, it's not unusual for US attorneys to be fired either gradually or at once under a new president. The scandal here is that these attorneys were fired for not targeting Democrats enough.

PGR: "democrats grasping at every straw to discredit the administration."

No, the administration is ably discrediting itself by its actions. The Democrats aren't so much grasping at every straw as they are picking up all the straws the administration has left scattered around the ground.

As per this scandal, #7 Gabriel has it right. The Bush admin. wants to use the US Attorney's Office as its own personal tool to target Democrats.

I thought there was no way neither measure would pass. I agreed with the logic behind the "no" and "hell no" votes, but how often do the election results match the Stranger's endorsements? It is awesome to hear mayor Gridlock talking about people capacity over car capacity.

Gabriel and him: You guys are right, I guess what I'm trying to call attention to is that "targeting democrats" vs. other forms of partisan behavior is agonizing semantic hair splitting. I just heard that 'W is mad about the way these firings were conducted. Fine.
People seem to think that partisanship is a dirty word. It isn't. In a couple of years, President Mrs. Bill Clinton will do some major revamping and the GOP will cry foul. The game goes on and on.

@11,

Typically, liberals and conservatives have different theories on law enforcement and generally prefer to have their own kind enforcing the law. Reno fired those U.S. Attorneys because, after 12 years of Reagan/Bush, it's likely that almost all of them were Republican appointees. The Clinton administration likely preferred liberals or moderates, attorneys who would care more about cracking down on crime than cracking down on porn and other consensual behavior.

In this instance, the Bush administration has fired their own appointees who haven't been obedient enough, as others pointed out, U.S. Attorneys who are more concerned with enforcing the law than engaging in Republican witch hunts against Democrats.

Also, past presidents like Clinton and Reagan fired the attorney's shortly after becoming president, and allowing most to retain their positions throughout their terms. GWB is the first to fire so many, simultaneously, deep into his second term. Combined with the documentation that these firings were punishment for failure to pursue the Democrats as single-mindedly as the Bush administration would have liked, this becomes a very suspicious turn of events that should become very interesting over the next several months.
