Slog - Comments on Liberty: Freedom of Espresso

Liberty has begun daytime espresso service, and in celebration: free espresso drinks, all week long (that's through Sunday), from 7 a.m. through 4 p.m. (one per customer per day, please, greedmonster). They're using Stumptown beans (very good and also very do-goodery, in a good way, though currently trucked up from Portland, so you'll want to offset that carbon or whatever until June, when a roastery will open on 12th and Pike) and organic milk. Also: free wi-fi, all the time. And: today only, free cookies and muffins from North Hill Bakery across the street (which is really good but should...

who has better coffee? i really dont like super friendly and smily baristas anyway. give me my cup of regular, black, strong coffee and let me go about my existence.

michael, i might be mistaken, but as a food critic for this fine rag, i beleive it is bethany's job to inform us of not only good places to try to grubb, get drunk on fine wine and melancholy when we get the bill, but also where one can find a freebie in this here yuppie, middle class wasteland which we call our city.

Come on Mikey S -- Yay for a successful marketing effort by an indie business. I'm glad we're not arguing over yet another SBUX campaign, etc. Anyhow, Liberty offered espresso before but it didn't really take off so good luck on the big push. The j/v operation with North Hill is natural synergy. World domination is next. Maybe Liberty can be North Hill's Sunday solution?

And golob@2, I've seen plenty of ugly people in Liberty

Stumptown is the best coffee I've ever had. In Portland at least. I'd probably be hard pressed (yuk yuk!) to definitavely make that claim against Lighthouse of Vivace though.

Sounds pretty petty to say, but my life improved significantly when a coffee shop in my neighborhood opened serving Stumptown (now serving their own). Not too many places in SF really gave a shit about coffee when I moved here 7 years ago (Cafe Trieste is the only place that comes to mind).

There is an espresso stand in Bothell where the girls are in chaps and shimmy while they get your java whipped into a lather.

About offsetting the carbon emmissions for them trucking the coffee beans from Portland, until June, when I assume they will be picking coffee beans from shrubs growing on a hillside at 12th and Pike ... oh, nevermind.

Comment by Charlie

To clarify, I didn't mean to imply that Victrola is not independant. They are. I meant that their competiton to date has been SBux and Ladro.... While Ladro is locally owned, it's a bigger and more company-oriented chain than I like to frequent.... Sbux is not even worht mentioning..... so I am happy to see a smaller business I can go to instead of Victrola. I don't need super cheery fake baristas, but someone, anyone besides the snobbery I get from that place.

And their coffee isn't that good.
