I haven't lived on the Hill in 10 years so I am so out of touch what 15th is like now. Good to know Horizon is still there. A large portion of the books I own I bought there.
The problem with 15th is that you have to walk UP to get there, as opposed to DOWN to go to Barnes & Noble.
Am I right, folks?
inside gossip - gay bar on 12th
I probably bought close to a thousand books at Horizon back in the late 70s, early 80s. When I returned to Seattle after a long absence I was disturbed to find that they pretty much have the same stock now that they did then. A cleanout is probably in order. Great shop, though.
The Cypress location is cursed but seems a likely target. Ari, Route 10 is the party bus.
Sure you have to walk up to get there, but the benefit is you get to walk down to get back. Always easier to walk down after a night out.
Especially if you're going to be carrying a bag full of books.
I've only seen the last two incarnations, but this latest is the better of the two (obviously). Unlike Kozak's which had a steady decline in quality, Cypress'food and service has improved with each visit. There is still something about that space that is uninviting, but their decor efforts have improved that (slightly) too. Decent place to grab a casual, inexpensive meal.
@3 - where/what is the gay bar on 12th?
I think the post started with speculation about where THE LINDA who owns three bars might open her next, number four.
My post - gossipy tidbits among a circle of people I know that is is to be - a gay bar on 12th. And I do not work at the Stranger.....center of gossip certitude.
22 doors is for sale? not sure if there's a connection . . .
Bethany, Erich Ginder makes an awesome hoof lamp, FYI. http://www.erichginder.com/wilderness.html.
I love that Viceroy lamp, too.
I used to live on 15th Ave East and Horizon Books seems to always have a 50% off sale on everything. And it's a great book store to boot! So get in there and BUY BUY BUY!!!
But 15th Ave needs something just not sure of what it needs though to pull it out of it's strange funk.
15th Street needs:
A 4 plex movie theatre
A great, cozy Euro/bistro (no, 22 Doors and Liberty do NOT count)
A liquor store, cause i'm too lazy to walk down to 12th....
A bitchin' art gallery/bar
I thought of King's as more faux-upper midwestern lodge aesthetic. I wonder if the 15th Avenue plan is related to the impending condoification of Pine?
That Cypress space has turned over a ton. Let's count the places that have been there since I moved into the hood a mere 3.5 years ago:
* Maguire's (Irish Pub)
* Frou frou fish taco place (name of which escapes me)
* Kozak's Polish BBQ
* Cypress
* ???
Rainbow and Horizon look like they're on their last legs. There may also be ground floor retail in the new condos going on up 15th and John (where Kidd Valley used to be).
For perspective, I should also point out that when I first moved in, the house behind mine was a shooting gallery (aka, smack dealer's pad) and I routinely found needles and used condoms in our parking area.
i was at cypress last night where owner jed smithson informed me it would be their last day being open and that linda has indeed purchased the joint. to be named SMITH'S, it will be 1920's vibe dinner club.
