So Ann Coulter called John Edwards a faggot. The video is up over at ThinkProgress. Here’s what she said…
I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.
She was at a the Conservative Political Action Conference—along with some GOP candidates for president—and the crowd, naturally enough, broke into loud cheers. Har har—that guy married to the woman with breast cancer? Total fag! Hilarious! But Coulter isn’t breaking new ground here, as Towleroad points out. Coulter once called Al Gore a fag.

I wish that those saps who actually buy into the "family values" schtick would realize that they are being played to by cyncical opportunists. This woman is a caricature, a Saturday Night Live version of what a conservative is. The trouble is, she attracts those people who feel that way, which pollutes the conservative movement, and turns it into a parody of itself.
Not that conservatism has any appeal to me personally, but it would be nice to have something intelligent to bounce your values against. But conservatives - at least those in the popular media - can't debate, can't discuss, all they can do is talk over you with dumb insults.

Coulter's like someone who wakes up in a dark room and, feeling around for the walls, realizes, "hey, there ARE no limits". She can go as far as she wants, and the farther the better for her fans. And she has fans, shaky-voiced, trembling, worshipping fans. They ADORE her. She could have them all chanting "Sieg Heil" with no trouble at all.
The fact that these are the people who run our country shows that there's something seriously wrong with our society. Can you imagine these assholes in charge in Canada or England?
Not to sound too dramatic, but today's Republicans have shredded our national identity over the last six years.
We're taught in school that the US historically has stood for truth, justice, the American Way, yadda yadda. Now what do we stand for? Hate? Hypocrisy? Lies? Corruption?

1. Make an outrageous and juvenile conservative comment in a public forum.
2. Watch it reproduce like a virus on every liberal blog on the internet.

4. Accept invitations to appear on popular mainstream media talk shows to discuss your outrageous comment.
5. Smile flirtaceously, show off your legs, and plug your latest book on said talk shows.
6. Go shopping.

Be that as it may, Coulter is simply proof that, if you're a Far Right Republican, you CAN "fool all of the people all of the time", if by people we mean anyone of the same socio-political persuasion.
Listen again to the crowd's reaction. It was tentative and uncomfortable at best, apparently egged on by the reaction of others until it became a facsimile of laughter. Cuntler's '15 minutes of fame' are just about over.

I agree with Chillymama. At first, I wasn't going to listen to Miss Coulter, but then I heard the clip on Rachel Maddow (gots to have me my Rachel) and - based on my years spent in hotel ballrooms, half-listening to various speakers - it was an uncomfortable moment, with only a few doofuses really cheering, and some tepid polite clapping.
Either that, or there just weren't that many people in the room.
