Apparently Sen. Roach was never toilet-trained.

I saw her on TV last night and it's amazing how delusional she still is.

Oh my God, Pam Roach and Val Stevens are FANTASTIC. I used to love going to their committee meetings when I was a wee press intern; they would always say the most jaw-droppingly outrageous things. Particularly memorable was a debate about a bill that would assure that no woman could be charged with indecent exposure for breastfeeding. Sen. Roach "argued" that women in Africa had breasts that drooped to their belly buttons, and later stated (on the house floor, with many reporters and onlookers present) that if men's scrotums were around their necks, they would be required to always wear a tie. This statement was greeted with stunned silence. Logic? Don't need it! I love it that this incredibly conservative lady brings up anuses, breasts, and scrotums every chance she gets.

Sometimes I wonder what strange planet she inhabits where she thinks things like this. Does she really think sex ed to fourth graders is going to be talking at length about "anuses"? Seriously??

Is it really that hard for her and the other radical right-wingers in Olympia to understand that a number of studies show that 30-70% of teens have had sex (depending upon their year) during high school, so perhaps only talking about how bad it is to have sex is not really the best way to protect those teenagers?

A staffer at The Olympian said Roach was investigated a few years back for pulling a gun on a legislative aide.

I know she was pretty outspoken on the gun-show loophile bill.

Rumor is she's mormon too.

Message for Pam - yes, honey, the homos are after Roach family anus, but not yours yours.

That son is kinda cute….. did you give him the homosexual danger talk yet?

Aside from the middle schools, every adult I know needs some more sex education. More, indeeed.

Is there any way we can get technique taught in schools?

i would argue that anuses are fine for sex ed topics, but isn't 4th grade is a little young for such heady talk? i mean, they're making stupid fart and poo-poo jokes only a little younger than this--maybe let them live in a childish world a few more years...i loathe the republicans, but don't you see that maybe people in the middle of the road would be put off, almost instinctively, by getting this graphic this young?

i went to elementary school with two of her kids way back, and used to stay over at their house from time to time. I can't remember for certain, but it seems like they had a dozen kids, all of whom looked exactly like their father - round heads, thin hair, lots of freckles.

I remember thinking, even then, that she seemed a little too tightened. As if every movable part of her body was just a little too tense and she couldn't make small movements - everything was shaky and big, like a kid with the Palsy.

They lived in a housing development outside of Kent, called 101 Pines. I recall there not being many real trees within the development itself, and the entrance was a pretty steep hill.

She never talked about anuses or scrots back then.

As I Slogged before, the Republicans really have some pathological intense fear of sex.

Could someone please ask them why?

No one wants to fuck them; why do they keep trying to make life hell for the rest of us?

And is anyone else embarrassed that these crazy liars are Washington State Senators?

Ellarosa,
They are not talking about anal sex in 4th grade. It in the anatomy material...the anus is one of the anatomical structures they are required to identify, along with the uterus, vagina, bladder, fallopian tube, etc.

ellarosa,

I doubt that anything that explicit being taught to 4th graders. And really, they are old enough at that age for medically accurate information. Remember, according to FBI stats, 2 out of 10 or more already have some personal familiarity with sex thanks to pervy family members.

Thanks for the hilarious anecdotes, Kalakalot.

ellarosa- fart and poo-poo jokes are part of a man's humor repertoire well into old age. If outgrowing such jokes were the starting-point of teaching about the anus, there'd be an informational insert included with every man's AARP card - "The anus, prune juice, and you".

NOT THAT I WENT TO COLLEGE TO BE A TEACHER, BUT, BUTT HOLE = ANUS WOULD BE A BETTER MESSAGE

FOR THE 5TH GRADE, AND MOST ADULTS

Both Val and Pam make me think of Mrs. Farmer (Beth Grant) in Donnie Darko...

"I’ll tell you what he said. He told me to forcibly insert the Lifeline exercise card into my anus!"

Sex ed in fourth grade is a great idea. It doesn't have to go into great detail about sex, but the basics are important.

Remember, after all, that girls are menstruating earlier and earlier these days. I got my period the summer before 5th grade, and it was 2 years before I learned that there were two holes down there (thanks, repressed Catholic mom!).

Totally #18. Plus, there were girls having sex in sixth grade in my school. Best they know the facts before embarking on such a thing.

#8, I can see the desire to keep kids "innocent" until they're a little older, but basic, truthful information about how babies are made is important to know early on. Many parents are too embarassed to tell their kids about where babies come from (mine never did) so school is the only place where they can get unbiased info from a person that isn't their parents, which sometimes can be a good thing.

@3 - Pam Roach and Val Stevens - I used to figure out if I didn't like a bill by looking for their names - if I saw both on legislation, it was 99.99 percent likely that it was horrendous in actual practice.

Wake up and smell the coffee people. The 4th graders are listening to explicit lyrics and watching essentially soft core porn on network broadcast tv. By 5th grade they need a run down of all the basics of protecting oneself from STDs and pregnancy. The cool thing is at that point it is still possible for the parent to participate in the discussion and consideration of these topics and family values. 5th and 6th grades are a great time for parents to make clear their values to the kids and explain why. A great time to talk about caring for other people and emotions, and making individual decisions over peer decisions. By 7th grade a large number of kids are shutting out the parents in these matters completely, especially if a dialogue isn't started early.

Furthermore, the sex ed has to talk about anal sex, especially with the abstinence crowd. Studies have shown that teens who take the abstinence pledge are more likely to have both anal sex and unprotected anal sex!

@22 - and oral sex, don't forget, the "abstinence" crowd has more of that too.

Totally unprotected as well. Far riskier.

"Studies have shown that teens who take the abstinence pledge are more likely to have both anal sex and unprotected anal sex!"

yes, teens. my point exactly. call me hopelessly old fashioned and/or naive (i'm braced for it), but that's when i'm comfortable with sex ed. in school. twelve, thirteen. 4th grade is 9 YEARS OLD, folks. i'm calling that i bit green. i'm betting most of america does, too.
