Anonymous Whine About Inevitable Development

posted by on March 30 at 9:48 AM

This morning brought the following letter to I, Anonymous. The letter is boring and riddled with typos and the letter-writer’s motivating complaint has no merit, but…enjoy! (Sic throughout.)

The wine/coffee bar called “LIBERTY” is trashing up street poles all up and down 15th ave east. The street appeal will soon have the appearance of broadway or the Pike/pine area. A group of us good neighbors have informed them that all street pole ads are being removed to keep our neighborhood looking nice but they keep placing the ads higher on the poles and we keep taking them down. I decided to live in this neighborhood because it was not trashy and fairly clean compared to down the hill—Broadway. This may seem like a small problem to sum but its amazing how the pole litter attracts more pole litter. I think this establishment is a BAD NEIGHBOR in a good neighborhood. Just wanted to inform somebody. I’m in the process of figuring out how to get other businesses on the street to tell the owner of this place to respect the neighborhood.

Some might say “respecting the neighborhood” means accepting totally legal street advertising (dismissed by Anonymous as “pole litter”). Some people also know how to spell “some.”

This "clean" neighborhood you're looking for is actually out at Jubilee. Go there and cry about pole litter.

Jubilee! Jubilee? Jubilee!

#3 Your comment reminds me of growing up in Lacey and cutting through Panorama City on my bike to visit a friend. Fucking Twilight Zone! Stepford for the aged!

I think they are probably just used to spelling "Cum" and carried it over into other similar words.

I like Liberty's posters. They're a cool reminder that somebody is trying to build a business in the neighborhood and is willing to use a little elbow grease. Want something to bitch about? The quality of the garage sale signs so far this season leaves a lot to be desired! Ambiguous arrowing, floppy cardboard. Please.

@8. oh and don't get me started on idiots that don't put a freaking date on their sign, and then proceed to leave them up for a month after the sale.

fucking bastards!

If you think pole litter is a harmless expression of speech or a good way to promote a business, you should take a look at the telephone poles that line NW 23rd Ave. in Portland. You might change your mind.

At least Liberty is an improvement on what was there before, a low end thrift shop and then it was an empty store front.

People bitch that there are empty store fronts and bitch when someone builds something. Time to LEVEL ALL OF THE HILL AND MAKE IT A HUGE PARKING LOT!!!! AND all the light poles will have lots of trashy hand made signs!!!

This is no different than Erica et al. whining about losing bars in Pike-Pine.

Let's see here... a new business in its first weeks of operation (Liberty's daytime business just opened with a different owner than the nighttime bar) places a few posters on telephone poles, and this guy labels them as a bad neighbor? You've got to be kidding me. We all remember the madness of a few years back when posters were banned throughout the city. The ban was lifted for good reasons:

(1) Pragmatically, banning posters stifles commercial and creative activity by silencing the voices of entrepreneurs and artists who don't have enough $$$ to advertise through "normal" corporate channels. Without audiences, these community-friendly ventures can never grow and the neighborhoods they support suffer.
(2) Jingoistically, banning posters violates free speech. Go America!
(3) Selfishly, I kinda want to know what's happening in my neighborhood so I can participate in the community. Does that make me a bad neighbor?

Soapboxing aside, Liberty AM gave away *free* espresso for a week and I'm pretty sure I saw the "anonymous" whiner enjoying a free cup of joe. Can you feel the righteous indignation?

Hello all.

Well. What a lovely tizzy. Unfortunately, it's not a beautiful sunny day, or we'd all I imagine be outside instead of here, contemplating beautiful telephone poles.

Ah, the telephone pole. Almost a contemporary museum of sorts.

Speaking of art, let's talk about the arat in question on these poles (and, by "poles" not the kind that serve kielbasa). You know, folks, there are a lot of things to get all up in an uproar about, but colorful signs on street poles? Really? Those are so upsetting? Hmm. Methinks that you my friend (the 'i, anonymous' poster) really has a lot of time on their hands. I sure wish that I did! Man, I'd write to the Stranger and complain about the weather. I mean, where's the damned sun? Or, I hear that there's something going on in Iraq or something?

Anyway. We're all kind'a proud of our new Liberty AM, since; after all, we're serving Stumptown espresso(great stuff). It's a great accompaniment to our fine, fine, fresh-fruit cocktails, and dare I forget our artful and tasty sushi?

Alrighty, then. Off I go to make a Jasmine. Yummy. Fresh-pressed lemon, gin, Cointreau and a kiss of Campari? Wonderful.
