Regardless of the ultimate outcome of all this brouhaha, Ms. Marcott has been immortalized by having a satire sent up through the tubes of the interweb:
The Pandagon Papers
Whether it was a miscommunication stumble inside the campaign itself or a Rovian-plotted rumor mill, regardless--the damage to Edwards' credibility have been done.
As in most news cycles, the initial accusation/brouhaha makes the front page; the inevitable truthful dispelling of it will end up buried on the back pages. See the infamous Gore "inventor of the Internet" quote-myth.
Except that no part of this episode made "the front page"; no one except the most extreme of the blog narcissists even noticed this non-story. Three months from now not even they will be able to remember what happened or who was involved.
Yeah, those extreme blog narcissists at the New York Times were all over it.
You want to make a list of all the things the New York Times has written about in the past three months that nobody cares about now? It's a long one. Where's all the Stranger coverage of the Scooter Libby trial?
