Today in Total Douchebags

posted by on February 15 at 10:01 AM

Former Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway went on the radio yesterday to talk about another former NBA player, John Amaechi, who recently came out of the closet. It wasn’t pretty:

“You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don’t like gay people and I don’t like to be around gay people,” Hardaway said while a guest on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket in Miami. “I’m homophobic. I don’t like it. It shouldn’t be in the world or in the United States.”

At least Hardaway was being honest—none of that “I have gay friends, I just don’t want to be around them in the locker room” bullshit. And the honesty only continued:

“First of all, I wouldn’t want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don’t think that is right. I don’t think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room.”

Hardaway also went on to say that if he had found out a player on his team was gay, he would have asked for them to be removed from the roster. Even more honesty!

But then, just hours later, all that honesty went away. Hardaway’s handlers, or maybe even NBA commissioner David Stern, must have reached out to him because he later called in to a Fox affiliate to make amends:

“Yes, I regret it. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said I hate gay people or anything like that,” he said. “That was my mistake.”

Ah, that makes everything better.

The worst thing is that this whole ordeal isn't getting more press. But then again, it's not like he said he hated Jews or black people, so I guess it's fine.

What a ignorant putz. After all these years the black man has finally gotten what he wants, freedom, and the right to screw any white woman he wants. I'm sure there are many knocking on his and his fellow players doors. But if he were to step back into the past and remember that Black basketball players did not have rights and were spit on when they flirted and got in the pants of the white girls. So after all this we found a dream and now he gets a million dollar contracts, how come a Gay basketball player can't play alongside him or against him. my point is if he can screw white woman, then a gay dude can screw men. Whats the big deal.

it's cool though, because you know what? i hate ignorant, immature, over-paid athletes. i mean, i hate them. i let it be known. i don't like it. they shouldn't be in the world or the in the united states.

wow, I love it when one brand of genetic 'freak' (excessively tall people with enough coordination to play a mind-numbingly boring game) point the finger of intolerance at another, statistically superior brand of genetic 'freak'(homos).....

maybe we need to send him to that fabulous rehab facility where they detoxed the hate out of that annoying 'Grey's Anatomy' guy in three weeks...

hmmm...and it only took 3 weeks to 'de-gay' our buddy in Colorado Springs...I sense a trend here...

ok, I know I'm going to catch a storm of S for this, but....

The dude (before the handlers got a hold of him) was straight up about his bigotry. Bradley alluded to this ("at least he was being honset..."). Call me crazy, but I find it more irritating when someone expresses the *exact same* sentiment, but is too chicken S or self deluded to say, "I'm a homophobe, I hate fags." At least you know where you stand with this dude.

Ok, let the S storm begin!

@strangeways: how are homos a statistically superior brand of freak?!? I'd rather earn millions playing a game than be a toilet troll. But if you have more fun trolling public toilets, have at it, tiger.

@ Mike in MO: I understand that theory (blatant _____-phobia is better because you know where you stand), but I personally think it is worse than a person who is privately homophobic, whatever. The reason is that people who are indifferent (say, kids who have yet to make up their mind) won't be influenced by, say, Hardaway's negativity if he just kept his opinions to himself. But, they see an admired sports figure (or someone else) openly bash gays, and they may think that's okay to do.

I'm with you in amazement Mike. The most bizarre part of the whole spiel it was hearing Hardaway being so straight up about his opinions.

One wonders if Hardaway would have a problem setting the police dogs and training the fire hoses on any gay players that appeared in his former locker rooms.

It's inspiring that given the atmosphere of any pro locker room, gay athletes remain determined to compete.

I think "statistically superior" just means there are more of 'em.

Actually, I find his honesty refreshing.

What’s most infuriating to me is all of the lying and duplicity that seems endemic to people in our society.

It’s the “we’re not sexist/racist/homophobic and don’t want any discrimination, except when it matters like for human and civil rights” lies that are the most appalling.

Truly, we are living in the Golden Age of Hypocrisy; in fact, saying one thing then doing the opposite seems to be America’s core value.

I’d rather have someone like Barbara Madsen or Master Pastor Ken Hutcherson, et al just admit that they’re prejudiced bigots who hate gay people than go through some sleazy charade about how they just don’t agree with us.

I am not surprised at all that a pro athelete has the IQ of a brick and the tolerence of a rabid dog, but i am shocked at how sheltered he apparently is in his homophobe ivory tower. I guarentee you when his "handlers" got to him after his statements he was probably stunned to be told that those oppinions are not appropriate to be espoused in public. If that's what he felt cofortable saying on TV, imagine what is said (or worse, done) in the sheltered confines of the locker room. I was happy to see that Sir Charles Barkley offered pretty strong support for Amaechi and flatly renounced homophobia in sports, but i wonder if Barkly (obviously 1000 times smarter and wiser then Hardaway) is just more aware of what he is supposed to say. Anyway, we can now conclude that Hardaway and Carl "Dinosaurs are a hoax" Everett are BFF.

him> good point about the impressionable.

My favorite hypocrite statement: "I'm not racist, I just don't think whites & blacks should breed."

thanks levislade...

apparently him equates homosexuality with 'toilet trolls'...actually, seems to be obsessed with the notion of them.

what a douche...

and are toilet trolls related to lawn gnomes? and if they are, should someone alert travelocity?...

He hates himself for being black. He thinks his white friends aren't really his friends, because he is inferior to them, so he looks for someone to hate, which will give him some sort of validation. Homos are handy for that.

WTF? Can you elaborate that. That is insulting to Black heterosexual males.
Do you think we black men always have a inferiority complex with white friends. I don't quite get what you mean that we turn on homosexuals to fulfil that need to feel important.

@longball: at least back in the day, Barkley would say whatever he wanted to, regardless of potential fallout. Unless he's changed, I'd say that's his honest opinion.

@strangeways: actually, I honestly had no idea what you meant. I used "toilet troll" because I had just read an earlier Slog post about that. I thought I could offend you like you did tall people and/or people who like to play basketball. And I did, so na na na na!!! You're a stinky toilet troll!! Humourless Brit.

"Do you think we black men always have a inferiority complex with white friends."

No, of course not. Stop looking for an insult where none is intended. It's just my feeling that THIS PARTICULAR INDIVIDUAL has a self-hatred, so he looks for someone to feel superior to.

It's like a closet queen that desparately tries to be "straight-acting", and talks about how he hates homos to his buddies, so they won't think he's one.

The worst thing is that he didn't apologize for his views; he apologized for speaking them. "That was my big mistake". It's OK to think that (fags | nig nogs | women drivers | pencil necks) should be exterminated; it's just not OK to say so in public. Lovely.

Yeah, loved that killer crossover.

(the move to the basket, not his backtracking bullshit)

"I would totally distance myself" if there were a gay person on his team? Oh honey, I don't think you'd have to worry too much about that. You're not QUITE as irresistable as you seem to think you are.

Why do the homophobes all have this deep-seated conviction that they are utterly irresistable to gay folks? Most of them are just not all that and a box of cookies.

nig nogs? WTF is a nig nog?
