@Chris Matthews thing:

Why is the "Iraq vote" still an issue? Why do people care about it still??? More than 86% of people were all about the war then, and damn near all the congressmen/women voted for it. Its a simple game of numbers. Their constituents wanted it, so WTF?!?! I have always been against the war, but I am not going to hold a vote on the war over someones head. Plus, how were any of us to know how truly f-ed the war would get? I knew it would be bad, but I severly underestimated how poorly Bush and Co. would manage things. People need to get over the Iraq vote and move on.

To put it another way: If your job is to appease a large number of people, and 86% say: we want coffee. What are you going to do?? You're gonna give them coffee so they keep you employed. So what if 14% wanted tea? You have to appease the majority, otherwise your career is over. Also, Chris Matthews is obviously a sexist asshat. Just like most men his age. Not surprising.

How many thousands of public "victory" dollars and hours did it cost to save the latest group of mountain climbers in peril?

You might have missed this because it was in the Sports section: Gregoire comes out in favor of Renton arena, lies about whether state tax dollars would be used ($117 million would come from education and the general fund).

re: Sirius & XM...Howard Stern stands to inherit 7 million potential listeners, to go with 6.5 million portential he already has. And no markets; anyone in the tiniest outpost of the bible belt can get him now. No need to be in a big progressive city to get him now. Viva la Revolucion!!!

On the Croatian sugar packets.

No surprise there. Croatia was an ally of the Nazis and Italy.

During the Bosnian war, Croatians proudly displayed swastikas on their uniforms as well as symbols that honored the fascist Ustaše. The Croatian death squads went by that name.

The Ustasa was later kicked out by Tito and the Chetniks and the partisans from Yugoslavia, who were mostly Serbs. During the Bosnian war, the Croatians at first fought the Yugoslavians, but then joined in the genocide against the Bosnian Muslims. No surprise there. Croatia has a long tradition of Nazism and is a lousy country to visit if youre brown.

Fnarf @ 4,

I saw that, too. It simply begs the question:

Has Chris Gregoire lost her damn mind?

First there's the constant flopping over the viaduct, then there's the "warming" to the Sonics' extortion demands.

She seems to be doing her best to piss off the people that want to vote for her in the hopes of attracting people who would never vote for her anyway.

Sheesh.

As for the rescued climbers, one aspect of that story bothered me.

Oregon has introduced a bill to mandate beacon devices if you go above 10K feet on Mt Hood to make it easier to find you if something happens. It's being opposed by some climbers that feel it makes the sport less dangerous, and they don't wanna do that.

I used to be a firefighter and did search and rescue all the time in a pretty rural mountainous area. It's dangerous work. And just because Big Bob wants to go climbing in January makes it even more dangerous.

Our legislators should propose the same thing here in Washington. We have rescue on Rainier quite a bit as well. If you're gonna go over 10K feet, you gotta have a beacon. Otherwise, as a climber/hiker you're being really selfish when you put that rescuer in danger as well.

It looks like the Hungarian thing is an attempt to prevent issues like the 16-year olds who made a little X-rated home video and now face charges...

It's time to pull the plug on the Iraq Fiasco and tell Bush that Iran is not how you spell it. That plus McCain is so last century. Or was it the prior century before that?

Oh, and why not get a real marriage in BC and then live in a civil union state? - under NAFTA, you get all the rights of marriage as it's a treaty - which overrides federal and state restrictions.

Plus, if you time it right, you can do the Olympics too ...

If they don't want 14 year olds video filming each other having sex, can't they raise the age of consent? Or make the age of consent only with other 14 year olds, like some states do here?

If they can have sex, they should be able to take pictures. I don't find 14 year olds hot, but I did when I was 14, and that's about the age everyone I know started. Might as well accept it as reality.

No. 21: True enough, but the law isn't restricted to non-commercial photo-taking by horny kids. Instead, it would also allow adult men to have sex with 14-year-olds in commercial porn, which isn't allowed in the US either because of child-pornography laws.

I think Tiz's point is that adult men CAN have sex with 14-year-olds in Hungary right now - they just can't film it, which is what might be considered inconsistent. If the fundamental problem is with older men having sex with girls that young, they should be raising the age of consent.

On Croatia - I believe that Speilberg filmed much of Shindler's list there because it is the only country in Europe where you can march legions of Nazi troops through the streets and nobody gets nervous.
