Murtha and Co. are very smart to tie funds to training and preparedness. Good move.

4.5 million? That's nothing. The standard is typically 50 times that number, at least.

I agree, Gabriel. Finally a good chess move by the Dems.

Tough decision on Kurds: help the only people who (sorta) like us in Iraq, but piss off NATO ally Turkey? Or leave them twisting in the wind?

is the point of this story to terrify people that the flu is some sort of killer strain? flu symptoms can signify any number of unrelated diseases. in fact, 16 years ago today someone i know died of septic shock (the same thing jim henson died of) - when people thought she had the flu.

Nah, it's only killed 2 people so far. Wait until the H5N1 really hybridizes, that will take out most of the young healthy folks - probably 20 percent of the population - think about it ...

But less here than when Mt. Rainier goes lahar - that will fill hospital beds with burn victims from BC to CA.

xina is right. "flu" very seldom is actually influenza. And a regular year's influenza is plenty deadly to the young and elderly. Even if you don't fit in those categories, it's worth getting vaccinated to stop the spread.

The unusual thing about the 1918 influenza (and presumably a H5N1 outbreak) is the killing of people 20 - 40 years old who usually survive an infection.
