So I Was Feeling Sorry For Myself When…

posted by on February 28 at 13:30 PM

In response to my post yesterday about my recent snowboarding accident—and trip, four days later, to the ER, where I learned that I didn’t have any broken bones—Doug sent this picture in to help me keep things in perspective.

I just read your Slog post. You have my deepest sympathies. Attached are two x-rays of my humerus—the bone that runs from the shoulder to the elbow in my left arm. Snapped in two while snowboarding and then “patched” together with a steel rod. Once you’ve been seriously injured on a board, your riding career is never the same. I’ve turned into a great big pussy on the slopes.—Doug

I’ve never been anything other than a pussy on the slopes—so it looks like I’ll have to turn into a teeny, weeny kitten. Thanks for sharing, Doug.

Life has a funny way of putting your injuries in perspective. Back in the summer of '05 I slashed my finger while trying to cut a plastic ring off of a glass bottle that I wanted to recycle. My wife drove me to the emergency room where we passed an obviously fatal car accident on Nickerson (a car had crossed the line and smashed headon into a pickup, and the police had it taped off and the windows of the car were covered up). I didn't feel so bad about my stupid accident then.

I know a guy who is an ER doc (overlake hosp., maybe?). Anyway, he sees everything they cart down from the pass ski areas. He says there are tons more per-capita snowboard injuries. Plus, the 'boarders have upper body injuries (skull fractures, broken collar bones, wrist and arm fractures, etc). Something about having your feet locked in, catching an edge, and being snapped over onto the slope . . . The skiers have boot-top leg fractures, but that's usually it.

My mom broke her lower leg in two places yesterday just walking down the street (in the Boston area, where a patch of black ice hid under some recent snowfall on the sidewalk). So, don't let this accident keep you from snowboarding. Especially not after all those uncharacteristically heartwarming stories you've written about it bringing your family together. You better keep at it.

Dan, at least you're not going bald like Josh!

Dan, I shattered my leg last year, February 27 2006. I'm now the proud owner of two steel plates and 17 screws holding together my left tibia and fibula. I'm also the newest runner in Seattle, having taken the leap a couple weeks ago. Give your injury time to heal, eat a proper diet to help the process along, and you can be as good as new or, (like this chica who hadn't ever run a mile before), better than new. Best of luck!

2planks #2:

In icy conditions, a boarder is more likely to break a wrist or collar bone than a skier. Unfortunately, most beginning boarders don't realize that riding on ice is a bad idea until it's too late.

Otherwise, having your legs braced together by a single board makes you much less susceptible to career-ending knee injuries, especially ACL tears.

Here's what the experts have to say about it. Check out page 2 in particular.

-- come back safe Dan, you telling me what to do from a wheelchair lacks power... however, might be more sassy?

I am hereby requesting the word 'snowboarding' be stricken from this website, as well as and in addition to all print copies of The Stranger. It is well known that the affluent white people of this city like to have a good time, forget the troubles of the world and have a "BITCHIN'! XTREME'! time. But for all the rest of us who don't care and can't afford it, please stop. It's almost like I can hear the word "slopes" coming out of your mouth and it really bothers me.
get well soon dan. shut up about snowboarding.
