What an douche... What exactly is his counter-point? Is he supporting that monstrosity thats proposed along the waterfront, or just bashing for the sake of doing so? It seems a little trite, even for the PI.

As a side note... the bit about him being a crack reporter made me laugh.

Please Dan, to expect any city, especially Seattle to lead anything. In this day and age of twisted religious fundamentalism no city in the United States will lead in anything. The only thing the anti-government folks have accomplished is establishing in everyone's mind that large civic projects will never work. And man, have they pulled that off! (Thank you Tim Eyman(sp.)!!)

Just sit back and enjoy what happened to Rome in the last days. A lack of interest in Civc projects, the rise of Christianity and people really not caring!!!

The amount of tax dollars confiscated and wasted by SMP was staggering. A recent editorial in one of the dailies put the figure at $225,000,000. I don't care how good the concept was, slamming City taxpayers needlessly like that more than qualifies as a "failed" project.

Seattle: Massengail Capitol of the World....

the city voted 3 times for the Monorail and it WAS assasinated by the Corporate Douches who opposed it, and the fiscal bumbling of the Monorail board...It wasn't a bad idea; it was a good idea badly executed...

Since none of the local press seems interested in honest appraisal of all the ideas for the AWV corridor, I'm going to try.

The ideas I've heard are:
Retrofit

Rebuild new Elevated Structure

Tunnel + trench in SLU

Tunnel: 6-lane

Tunnel: 4-lane

Monorail

Cable-Stay Bridge

Surface

Surface + Transit

Got any others I should add?

It was the $5-11 billion price tag that "assassinated" the green line. Nobody in their right mind pays that much for a glorified tram line.

Oh fuck it. Let's all buy new cars; it seems to be the only answer our state's purveyors of Conventional Wisdumb will accept.

Original Andrew needs a new Honda.

C'mon Gomez.

That is the total payment, counting all the financing costs and ignoring the time-value relationship of money. Shouldn't any honest evalation consider only principal costs? WIthout financing, something that could have easily been corrected by competent political leadership in the region, the tag was about $2 bn.

That amount includes operation and maintainance costs, something that no other big project includes in the cost estimate. Even with all these caveats, the project was a done deal with only about a 15% cost overrun until we pulled the plug.

It wasn't perfect, but it was an obviously better choice that either the rebuild or tunnel for the AWV corridor.

Dan, this was posted over at the PI Blog comments, too funny.

"It's a shame Dan and his crew don't keep their opinions restricted to their expertise, Astroglide -vs- KY, That appears to be the only legitimate point of view that's worth listening to.

Oh., unless you want tips on licking doors knobs or smuggling firearms and drugs into the mayors office."

How funny, I don't think you ever said you were an expert on the Viaduct. Of course at this rate who in this city is an expert on the Viaduct. No one.

Comrade Golob @ 9,

Please report to Honda of Kirkland for immediate transportation re-education.

I wonder if the people throwing these numbers around for the rebuild and the tunnel are planning on giving us the post-bond maturation number, like the Monorail people had to do? How much will that $4-5 billion or whatever they're saying it will cost ACTUALLY cost us, over the next 30 or 40 years?

Somehow, I doubt the P-I will tell us (though of course they were falling all over themselves to mention it when it came to the Monorail).

Wow thanks for covering the God Damn NASCAR track that Snohomish and King county legislators are trying to force up Kitsap county's ass.

Oh wait that is the political transportation story that you are ignoring in favor for more masturbatory articles on the Seattle viaduct..

I think assassinated is an apt description for the monorail. And trying to force Seattle to pay for Renton's Sonics Stadium is just as dumb.

All I can say is - at the end of the day - if we get Tunnel-lite only we in Seattle will be paying for all the costs - including inevitable overages of 40-200 percent (that's like up to $6 billion extra, kidlings). And gonna be a lot of fired leg people at city hall.

Does Stephanie pure have a solution to all this? It is her moment to strike.

Possible future career? Go Dan, ask the Stranger's anointed future leader.

What happened to all the Licata stories? None recently, what does Wonder Nick have to say about all this?

I heard he favors the rebuild, wow.

Thou doth protest too much. McGann's point is accurate enough, the Stranger's staff does support a surface option. It's activist journalism.

Oh, and this is the first time a reporter from one of the dailies has said a surface option might actually happen, and your response is to.....go ballistic?

I certainly find it shocking that newspaper folks--the most noble of professions!--are always so fucking bitchy. Until you ladies learn to hold yer liquor, we're going to cut you off....

It's called chumming the water - Dan Savage knows tantrums in favor of the Stranger Tunnel will elicit more wild responses from the Slog cult = Entertainment value for Slog lurkers such as myself.

Joe and Jane Seattle Taxpayer have little interest in supporting "visionary" boondoggle projects and simply want to the City of Seattle accomplish something with the funds that are already appropriated for the project.

visionary boondoggle? The surface option isn't visionary, it's a delightful void...replace something with...nothing. It's Dada-esque..

@16 - you can ask her at the 43rd Dems meeting on the 20th at the U Baptist Church (47th, 2 blocks west of University) - she's on the board. The topic this month is the Tunnel - Viaduct - other choices. She's a Vice-Chair.

No offense, Jake, but why SHOULD the Stranger cover the Bremerton NASCAR story? It's a Seattle paper, not a Kitsap County one. What happens in Bremerton seems less than relevant to most Seattle residents, I wager.

@22, exactly, it's as stupid as trying to force Seattle to pay taxes to build the Sonics a stadium in Renton.

Posted by Will in Seattle | February 13, 2007 11:22 PM

With any luck the rebuild and new Sonic stadium will break ground in the same month and concrete from the rebuild will recycle to the Renton site

I support both, possible skate board park under the via?

Love the naked basketball players - Sonics not Storm, hint hint
