I would be very surprised if there is any mainstream media attempt to solicit reactions from the WNBA. And I would be very surprised if the NBA had anything to say on the subject besides "we have no opinion on the political activities of ownership groups". Realize that these people are probably only barely aware that they own a WNBA franchise as well, which isn't really a significant asset. Like it or not, this is about the men's NBA.

The appropriate action is to continue to shed light on these people, and use it as another lever to get them out of our regional pocketbooks.

Ooh, I just had an idea: What if this makes public financing of their arena ILLEGAL? We have anti-discrimination and anti-hate-crime laws, don't we?

Despite the Hardaway blowup, I expect you'll get a big shrug from the NBA.

The WNBA, on the other hand, could have more to say. There seems to be a hugely disproportionate percentage of lesbian involvement in all aspects: players, coaches, and fans. If this gets a lot of press, and lesbians get pissed off in large numbers, it could seriously hurt the Storm.

#7--Our anti-discrimination law would certainly not making subsidies to a new basketball area illegal, simply because the owners of the basketball team have contributed to some sort of anti-gay marriage effort. It would make it illegal to fire (or not hire) a player or other employee simply because of his or her sexual orientation. Similarly, the malicious harassment statute is not designed to cover this situation. However, I think the argument that we ought not to be giving government hand-outs to people who are against legal equality for gay couples is a good one to direct to legislators and the county council.

Interestingly, our state constitution actually has provisions designed to prevent government give-aways to private business, but the courts have severely undermined these provisions, so our best remedy remains lobbying our elected representatives against these schemes.

I don't however think that anyone's going to care what the WNBA says, if indeed they are permitted to speak, as they are hugely subsidized by the NBA and couldn't exist for ten seconds on their own. They don't have any leverage at all. The people of Washington do, though.

These new owners are very out of whack with the values of not only their Storm fans and the vast majority of the people who live in the place where they choose to set up shop. Maybe they should just take the team and move back to Oklahoma. We need the email address of the owners to register our disdain for their homophobic values.

Well this makes it all the more clear that the new ownership doesn't have a clue how to run a WNBA team. Here's hoping they'll head back to OK and sell the Storm to a local group. Unlike the boys, the Storm could afford to play in Key Arena.

Mindfuck Fact: The WNBA TEAM salary cap in 2004 was $647k. McClendan gave $625k to AUPM that same year.
