Cirque du Soleil, you are definitely not invited back to the Super Bowl next year.

Don't you mean, "Off to a FLAMING start?"

And what's with the new agey x Miami Sound Machine soundtrack?

F-you, Brad, I just wasted five minutes of my life waiting for something to catch fire.

I really thought that was some "Miami is a place for fun!" demonstration. I thought it was some local kids they got together. It never occurred to me that it was a professional company that people pay money to see.

Was Lou Bega really the composer? Or did I just dream that announcement?

It's great to see the NFL finally come out of the closet.

They commit the ultimate show-biz crime: they're fucking BORING.

I was wondering what part the weather played. The sound throughout, before the game and at halftime, was ATROCIOUS, and I think it might have been the wind and driving rainstorm that were at least partially to blame. Half the singers' mics were out, there was no bass, no drums, nothing except Prince's horrifying guitar and the marching band (who don't use electricity).

fnarf @ 10: did you mean to say prince's totally amazing guitar that shredded the turf off the field?

one more time: best halftime show EVER. proof that prince is a consummate performer. a total weirdo, yes, but also the man to fucking bring it.

that cirque shit, however, was an atrocity.

Second that Prince was awesome. Am I The New Hendrix, Please? was what I thought when he went into All Along The Watchtower, but he managed to save his ass by turning the version into up-tempo guitar rocker. Good job.

Ugh, ugh, ugh. First of all, as shredding goes, it was mediocre; and second of all, shredding on the guitar is never, ever, ever a desireable thing to do or listen to. Hendrix my ass. We're talking Lenny Kravitz here. He destroyed the tunes, and the part that makes his music listenable -- the grooves -- was inaudible. And he can't sing anymore. Result: totally unfunky.

His Guitar Face is pretty good, though, and I did laugh out loud when he was doing the "huge erect penis arrow" behind the sheet. But man, give me some hard funk anytime over that stuff. Every bit as horrible as the Stones last year.

Fuck, I forgot about that for a second, Fnarf. The penis guitar on light-sheet was hilarious and rediculous and preposterous. I had been sober earlier in the afternoon.

But I still thought Prince did a better job than the sucky one I thought it was going to be. Good FOR THE COUNTRY. Purple Rain in the Rain. Hurrah.

I have long been a fan of Cirque du Soleil, and have seen three different shows when they've passed through Seattle over the years. So it pains me to concede you are right. That was atrocious. Boring and amateur. They do not translate well out of a tent and onto a football field.

Dear Cirque: please stick to what you know and do well.
