Lisa Nowak: The Face of Meth?

posted by on February 6 at 15:40 PM

We’ve been following the case of the diaper-clad, hammer-totin’ lady astronaut pretty closely here on Slog. In the comments on my original post today, TSM writes…

I say that drugs were involved, perhaps meth. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear that they give astronauts the stuff to keep them going, and she kept up the habit.

Meth would explain the sheer, maniacal determination the lady astronaut displayed. She drove 950 miles in diapers so that she wouldn’t have to stop along the way to use the toilet—that’s methy. It also might explain the before-and-after pictures of astronaut Lisa “Diapers” Nowak currently up on the Drudge Report. On the left, she’s a healthy looking lady astronaut. On the right, she’s an alleged first-degree attempted murderess. Note the weight loss, thinner hair, and papery skin…

Unfortunately we can’t see her teeth, which are usually the dead giveway. But that looks like the face of meth to me. How long until Nowak announces that she’s entering rehab?

Even if she's not on meth, she would be wise to pretend she has a need for rehab to lesson her sentencing. Seems to work for everyone else.

What is the point of meth? I don't even know what the high is supposed to be like. Unless it makes you feel loved when you are alone and makes you cum for hours, I don't know why anyone would even want to try it. Give me weed, acid, or 'shrooms any day.

Hard to say for sure..the hair can be as simple as her not dying it that red anymore and the fact that it's in a diff style (messy ponytail w/out bangs)

When they flashed that mug shot pic on the news, I thought it was Heidi Fleiss at first!

I realize meth is a popular whipping boy, and I certainly don't approve of its use ...

... but, why is this necessarily drug-related? Mug shots are hardly pro photography sessions, and she doesn't look any more thin (or less healthy) than the previous photo. One would assume that the trip alone -- an endeavor in itself, one that could have been easily managed with the aid of energy supplements or lots of caffeine to someone used to odd hours, like an astronaut -- is sufficient to account for the disheveled look. It is unlikely that she would want to smile for the camera and show teeth under such circumstances, either.

Woohoo, citation! Anyways ...

@4 - "... but, why is this necessarily drug-related?"

Well, any of the details by themselves might not point to drugs. But you have a successful, happily married mother of three, working in an institution which has apparently been known to give its workers amphetamines to keep them functioning for long periods, and then later suddenly she takes to her car with guns and diapers and crazy love letters and looks skinny and ashen in her mug shot ... well, apply Occam's Razor.

In the '20s, murderers were identified by their stoned, glassy eyes. Today: "That looks like the face of meth to me."

Every decade has its scapegoat drug. Whether it's pot, acid, coke, crack, ecstasy or meth, there are always riders to jump on the bandwagon of hysteria. People have always done freaky shit like this - regardless of whether drugs were involved.

Millions of people have used meth and just gone about their high-as-a-kite business. But only this lady made a predatory pilgrimage in a diaper to kill her crush. Even if she was on meth, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that she is batshit crazy.

We should recognize this pattern and resist the temptation to blame bizarre behaviors on drugs in such away that it reinforces unrealistic fears. Such phobias have historically been the impetus for passing harsh laws that do more to exacerbate society' problems than to solve them.

I don't see anything more nefarious so far than a woman pining for someone she can't have, a condition that's driven better people than you or I to do some fucked up shit over the years. She drove 1000 miles without stopping, wearing a wig and diapers and she was being booked at some ungodly hour of the morning - you'd have papery looking skin and scraggly-ass hair too!

If you look beyond this one photo, she looked like a normal woman for her age (albeit tired and like an unmade bed) in court today.

I'm not saying she's NOT on meth, I'm just sayin' this one photo is proof of nothing. All we know at this point is portions of a very sad story.

And rehab by the end of the week, meth or no.

I agree. That's not meth, it's misery.

I just think the mere love triangle story doesn't seem to add up. Astronauts undergo a lot of testing, both physical and psychological. It seems odd that a woman that unstable would go that far at NASA. It does, however, seem not unreasonable to me that an advanced drug addiction would make her more unstable than she might otherwise be.

At any rate, I suspect her defense lawyer will advance this theory, even if no one else does.

She wasn't running TO Orlando - she was running FROM three kids.

Chemically assisted or not, I seriously suspect some kind of serious mental break that goes beyond being involved in a "love triangle".

Jesus, Dan, that's some pretty shitty sleuthing. The only one of your conclusions that's arguably supported by those photos is that she might be paler, but even that is debatable given the different lighting/makeup. It's not uncommon to use pretty flimsy evidence to support conclusions that one is already predisposed to, but what is uncommon is just how low your standards apparently are.

What's most disturbing is that dingy fags like GW #7 are offended that meth is getting a bad rap. People that use and justify casual meth use are human garbage.

It is not drugs she is just a nut. So much for all NASA's testing.

How many miles per gallon did she get?

If you think it must be due to meth then you've never been in a crazy fucked-up obsessive relationship.

Because you don't need drugs to think driving a thousand miles to confront the woman who is messing with your man is a brilliant if you've obsessive enough. Haven't quite done that, but certainly thought some crazy shit.

@18:

WTF? There are no good or bad drugs. There are good and bad RELATIONSHIPS with drugs, and there are some drugs that are particularly hard to have a good relationship WITH. Meth is a fine example of a drug which many people have hard times with. Millions of people have used methamphetamine or amphetamine casually, recreationally, with no long-term adverse effects. There are NO drugs that automatically enslave their users. Addiction is a multi-faceted thing, and casting the blame on the demon drug of the moment will get us no closer to solving the problems of drug abuse and addiction in our society. I encourage you to rethink your statement in the light of similar statements made in the past with regards to alcohol, coffee, marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, acid, rock and roll, dancing, and nearly every other intoxicant known to humankind.

She kind of looks like Katie Couric in the photo on the right. I don't think she was on drugs at all.

She drove 1000 miles sitting in her own urine, packing rubber tubing, cash money & weapons and wearing a wig. That's not drug-crazy. My brother's a meth addict and I can tell you from experience that he just could not possibly accomplish all that while on a high. (With cash in his pocket to boot? No fucking way.) This woman is - how did GW @ 7 put it? - "batshit crazy."

We had a recent murder in our area, white woman on white woman, both married to cops, hubby of woman shot in head at close range had knocked up woman who did close-range shooting. No drugs involved. Just a love-crazed bitch.

Love is a Drug. At least, if you use it properly.

Well, or chocolate. Both are good, but both together are wonderful.

Is it just me, or is she hotter in the picture on the right? I'd take young Patti Smith over that nice-looking lady on the left any day.

Meth was my first thought when I heard this story. Then I saw Nowak's mugshot. I'm 100 percent certain she's a user.

Give me a fucking break. You can't base your addict theory solely on a comparison between a NASA publicity photo with a poorly lit mugshot. Has anyone out there ever had a booking photo that looked good? (OK...Tom DeLay, but he used his evil powers...) My last driver's license photo make me look like I'm coming off a heroin jag.

Maybe she was doing meth...maybe she was addicted to secret government uppers made of Iraqi baby pituitary glands. But -- while certainly on the extreme end of the spectrum -- this can't be the weirdest thing anyone has ever done for love. Am I right, Dan?

"Lady Astronaut"?

RIght on about the meth! That was my first thought when I saw those photos. Anyone who has gone to rehab or had a family member there will recognize the signs.

Probably an acute psychotic episode, not meth.
She'll be hospitalized, and retired from the NASA program, and in due time, maybe once she has satisfied whatever requirements for supervised treatment is required of her, from the Navy. My guess is that will occur in about a year.

She won't be punished, and probably not even prosecuted. Capt. Shipman will be persuaded to drop all criminal complaints against Capt. Nowak as being in the best interests of the service and the space program. That will occur quietly not long from now. The court will treat this experienced and obviously tragically afflicted astronaut--and let's not forget that--with considerable deference and compassion. She will be allowed to retire with dignity. Neither NASA, nor the Navy will allow anyone to hang this lady out to dry.

One possible event that would make a very intellegent married Space Chick go space orbit crazy is to have babies
(twins) by a space lover and have the hubby suspect or find out and have the space lover move on to another chick.
